Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 03, 2017 10:22 am Hey Guys Just wanted to share some information around bathroom reno's. I've had quite a lot of people asking me through social media on what to start with first, so I thought I'd share my process as a builder to help point you in the right direction. The secret is to break the entire bathroom renovation process (or any renovation, kitchen, extension etc.) down into bite size stages. The stages I use are as follows - 1. Research Stage 2. Planning Stage. 3. Pre-Construction Stage. 4. Construction Stage. 5. Project completion Stage. I deconstructed the entire process over on my blog, but a quick overview is as follows. 1. Research Stage. This is just as it sounds, this is when you first start looking around for ideas of how you would like your bathroom to look. The problem most people face at this stage is they spend hours trawling the internet or social media looking for ideas but don't go about it in a structured way. Pinterest, Houzz, and other platforms are a great way to find the look you are after, but you need to know how to create idea books and have a list of items you want to cover in point form. I.e. tiles first, then plumbing fixtures, doors, cabinets, shower screens, paint, the list goes on. Starting out with a structured plan and a good filing system will save you hours at this stage of your bathroom renovation. 2. Planning stage. This is where you get your ideas down on paper. No matter how big or small you project is you must have a plan. There are 3 ways you can go about this, 1 Hire a professional. 2. Use an online software program to create something yourself, or 3. Sketch something out on paper. Which ever way you choose to go it's critical to mark out where all your fittings will be located so that you don't leave any guess work up to your trades. 3. Pre Construction Stage. In my opinion this is where most of the hard work is required in your Reno, if you get this right the rest should fall into place. It's in this stage (a few months before you plan to start on site) that you will be sourcing your contractors and obtaining prices. You will also be going over all your materials required for the project, I recommend a items selection checklist, and purchasing all your tiles, taps, basins etc... It's critical that all these items are purchased BEFORE starting on site! In this stage you also need to map out the timeline of your project and book in your tradesmen for key start and finish dates. Once you have all of the above in place then you are ready to start with the actual renovation. 4. Construction Stage. Well this is just as it sounds, this is the fun part when you get in and rip the place appart But I strongly recommend hiring professionals to take care of all the skilled work, it's your job to project manage them to insure they do what you have contracted them to do. Below is a video of a 3 part bathroom renovation that I carried out and shows some of the key construction stages to a bathroom. https://youtu.be/ldHsrKJiV48 I will try and post part 2 & 3 next week. 5. Project Completion Stage. This stage is reasonably straight forward but covers things like defects liability periods for your contractors, fixing faulty work and being organised with your warranties. So that's it guys, that is my 5 Stage Renovation Process that I use in my business. If you are looking to tackle your own bathroom renovation process I suggest you follow a similar process to ensure you have a fun and successful experience. Feel free to share any of your own tips, stories (good or bad) or photos of your own bathroom renovation, I'd love to follow along. Cheers guys, hope this helps! Plan your requirements and the budget accordingly. Be flexible, ready to bear any unexpected expenses you may have to bear during the later stages. Planning is an important aspect of any remodeling project. Refer this article which says not having a definite plan could be disastrous leading to many potential problems in the future (http://www.dispenser.com/blog/organizedbath/common-bathroom-remodeling-mistakes/). The first step would be demolition of your bathroom. Start by draining and removing the toilet, to avoid any unpleasant spills. In the next step, cover up the bathtub and start removing tiles down to the studs. Remove the insulation from your walls using reciprocating saw to cut out the panels. Remember to use safety mask, gloves and goggles. Finally, remove cabinets, vanities, mirrors, floor tiles and so on. While choosing the contractor, a little legwork is required to find the best for your remodeling project. A bad contractor could sink your bathroom remodel. Collect references from other homeowners. Go through genuine feedback from real people who have lived through a bathroom renovation with a firm or designer you are considering.
