The metal tray under the shower has deteriorated, with the result that the timber base plate in two walls has rotted away, and a vanity unit damaged. I have experience repairing termite damaged frames, I can tile, and I have replaced many vanity units, all skills accumulated during 14 years of building maintenance in rental homes for Real Estate Agents. I have no experience with shower trays under tiled shower floors. My question is, what is the best shower tray system? Painted on waterproof membranes are the most common these days but by the time you rip out the shower, remove the necessary sheeting , repair the rotten timber frame etc I guarantee to do a complete job you will end up re-doing the whole bathroom. By the way, how do you know it is a metal tray under the shower ? Stewie Re: Shower tray failure has wrecked my bathroom 3Aug 30, 2016 8:29 am A plumber has advised that the metal tray has corroded. I am not at that address, so dont know how he has determined this; I only have his phone report. I expect to do the entire bathroom. I have experience with termite damage repairs, so the carpentry and tiling is no problem. I have no experience with shower trays. Re: Shower tray failure has wrecked my bathroom 4Aug 30, 2016 8:48 am If doing the whole bathroom the membrane way is the way they may/will go. I remember mine in an older house - slab floor - same thing. BUT - get it done right. The membrane MUST be installed properly. I hate hobs too - so I'd try to have as few corners/ends as possible. Re: Shower tray failure has wrecked my bathroom 5Sep 06, 2016 2:23 pm Yep paint on membranes are great and really work. No need for the old copper trays under the shower.
