Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: Which way to lay wall tiles 2Aug 02, 2008 1:12 pm HI Can you post some pictures or give some details as to where the tiles are to be laid? This could make a big difference in which way would suit the tiles.
For example I've noticed tiles being laid so they are tall rather than wide in bathrooms but that often it is the other way around in kitchens. We had planned to lay our kitchen splashback tiles as tall, however. At the time everyone else seemed to think they should be laid horizontally but since then I've noticed a few people considering laying them vertically like we had originally planned. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=5967&highlight=ugly+tiles If you look at this topic in the forum it might give you some ideas. There are several photos linked from the above forum below for you to look at as well. http://forum.homeone.com.au/files/thumbs/t_kitchen-tiles.jpg http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bathroomkr9.jpg http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ensuite1ez6.jpg Re: Which way to lay wall tiles 5Aug 02, 2008 6:21 pm If they are going in a bathroom, then you need to know the size of the floor tiles. if the floor tiles are 300 x 300, then you need to lay the wall tiles so they are 300 mm wide and 500 mm tall. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Which way to lay wall tiles 6Aug 02, 2008 6:37 pm We have ours layed vertical in the bathrooms (250mm x 330mm wall tile with 333mm floor tile), but horizontal in the laundry so they would fit nicely between the under bench and over head cupboards (slightly smaller tile at 200mm x 300mm). I'm hoping they will look OK vertical in the bathrooms, but they should match up fairly well with the floor tiles.

If you have low ceilings eg. 2400mm, then vertically can make the room appear taller as your eyes follow the grout lines up. If you have tall ceilings eg 2700 +, then horizontally can lengthen the room.
