Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 17, 2008 7:53 pm I have probably left this too late as we actually have our tile appointment tomorrow!! but.....
Would love everyone's opinions anyway! We will be getting some feature tiles, one lot around the top of the bath hob and then some in the showers. Which way do people think looks better in the shower....vertically up a wall of the shower or horizontally around a section near the top of the shower? I'm leaning towards horizontally as that is the way the bath feature tiles will be, but would love peoples suggestions Photos also help, whether they be your own or from a website My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Tiles 2Jul 17, 2008 8:22 pm Vertically seems to be the "in thing", although I think horizontal still looks good.
Would it work haveing horizontal in 1 part, on the bath, and then vertical on shower or should it be both the same? I have seen baths with a vertical strip too so could do both vertical. Not much help, am I Re: Feature Tiles 3Jul 17, 2008 8:27 pm your just like me Helyn!!
I thought it should both be horizontal, but then I am a bit weird!! It probably looks fine with one horizontal and one vertical I really have no idea! I've tried google but dont seem to be getting much, I'm going to look on PD and Metricons sites My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Tiles 5Jul 17, 2008 8:42 pm Most new designs I see have vertical on the floor and horizontal on the wall Re: Feature Tiles 6Jul 17, 2008 8:44 pm How do you mean vertical on the floor? (I hope that isn't really dumb )
I didn't think of a vertical strip on a bath, has anyone got pics of this done? Sounds like it could work... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Tiles 8Jul 17, 2008 8:52 pm We are having horizontal strip across the bath hob ($84.00) and the same feature in the ummmmmm totally forgot........the, the.....hang on going to find out! The NICHE!! ($162.00) This is for the kids bathroom and the feature is Pebbles (think they might be a bit like Rellie's pebbles).
For the ensuite we are having a 300mm wide vertical strip of noce/travertine mosiac one tile in from the corner. Our shower tiles are 300mm wide so the feature will be the same width. We only went vertical because we had the horizontal in our old house, we are trying to have "different" things this time around ($379.00). We are having the same noce/travertine feature for the splashback in the powder room but in a larger size ($256.00). Can't wait to see them up! Have fun! Happy at Home Re: Feature Tiles 9Jul 17, 2008 9:04 pm Thanks for looking Paula I get what you mean now!
Toni - Good work on remembering the wording!! We are not having any niches! I love your feature, I think it will look stunning! We are having the same white tiles as you for the walls/showers/bath, the white gloss 300 x 100.. There is a picture of them here on Andy's blog, hope he doesnt mind http://bp2.blogger.com/_94NtYLWLnwc/SAS ... CF4270.JPG Looking here, I think we would either have to have the features 100mm high horizontally like Andy has done, or 300mm wide like Toni will be doing..these are the only ways I think they will work with the white tiles I want a light airy feel to the bathroom, if I did the 300mm wide vertically like Toni has done in the shower then I think I would do a 300mm wide vertically strip on the bath to match... Hope this all makes sense...gosh my appointment is going to be LONG tomorrow My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Tiles 10Jul 17, 2008 9:14 pm Bel I had those tiles in the last house with a feature tile going vertically, but it was only about 10cm wide looked good, we also put them near the sink.

I think feature tiles are whatever and however you want them to be. DS decided that his "feature" tile would take up the whole area in the wall aroung the bath. 400mm high, the whole way around, except for where the window is. Our floor tile comes up the side of the bath and over the bath hob. Then he put the feature tile horizontally around both walls of the shower 200mm thick band. The feature tile is RED crocodile tile. The floor tile is dark charcoal. The bathroom will be ummm FULL ON!! In the ensuite there's no feature tile. There's a feature wall. All 1670mm x 2100mm of it. Our "feature" tiles are kind of taking over. I think they're politely referred to as statement bathrooms. TDL will probably call them blah. I guess what I'm saying is there are no rules. Feature lines horizontally, vertically, feature areas of tiles, feature tiles extending from the floor to the wall, floor tiles as a feature on the wall. There's no right way to do it. Just go for a look you like. I like the feature tiles to make a real statement but many people prefer a much more subtle look. The dimensions of the room also play a part. It depends which way you want to draw the eye. In my ensuite the wall of feature tile in the shower is on the far wall from the entrance to the room. It's a long narrow room so all that tiling will bring the wall in and make the room seem less long and narrow. One thing to think about is if the feature tile has texture. That's why DS wanted his feature around the bath and around the shower. He likes to touch it because it's textured. So maybe for the kids bathroom that could be fun. Terrence Malick Re: Feature Tiles 12Jul 17, 2008 9:19 pm Your right Paula that doesn't look bad at all - it looks really nice!!
That has helped me alot, atleast now I don't have to worry about feature tile sizes The link to PD Style Viewer, should open to a link of the Plum Berry style, if you look at the bathroom, they have used a vertical feature tile in the shower yet a horizontal one on the bath....I'm trying to work out what I think of it http://www.porterdavis.com.au/?#styles My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Tiles 13Jul 17, 2008 9:21 pm Can't wait to see your photos Jo! Your DS has done a terrific job in his selections and good on you for letting him do it! Personally though I don't like the tiles cut so for me I'd have to have the shower feature double the width as shown so the same size as the other tile - but that's me.....I'm a bit funny like that Happy at Home Re: Feature Tiles 16Jul 17, 2008 9:27 pm haywgl The link to PD Style Viewer, should open to a link of the Plum Berry style, if you look at the bathroom, they have used a vertical feature tile in the shower yet a horizontal one on the bath....I'm trying to work out what I think of it http://www.porterdavis.com.au/?#styles Bel that looks fine - I was thinking the tile around the bath was actually above the bath see no rules Paula Re: Feature Tiles 19Jul 17, 2008 9:29 pm House-To-Be Can't wait to see your photos Jo! Your DS has done a terrific job in his selections and good on you for letting him do it! We're having a powder room so no visitors ever have to go in there if it's really bad! I guess when there's only one child it's easier to involve them more. No fighting. He's been so good for over the 18 months of this process so he got the bathroom and the playroom to do. Blue lounge suite, blue wall, Japanese style doorway curtains as a wall hanging and a lava lamp so far ....dear god. Sorry for hijacking Bel. Terrence Malick Re: Feature Tiles 20Jul 17, 2008 9:30 pm haywgl I so know what you mean Toni, I'm the same But it would frustrate me then to have one feature tile thicker than the other!!
