Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 23, 2015 11:46 am Hi guys, we have just moved into our new place, and when we bought it the building report did say upstairs bathroom was leaking. You can see the base of the door frame has water damage. Now in about 12 months time we are going to fully gut and reno the bathroom, so i only need a short term fix so we can use the shower. all the tiles still seem ok. I plan to re-grout where it's missing, paint on some sort of sealer and then silicon up all the corners. now the question is which sealer to use. seems to be some many types! i have found these products: Crommelin - shower sealer- but its only for grout not tiles 'Shower Plug' - that seals grout and tiles, but not sure if its as 'penetrating' as the Crommlin one Sure Seal Tile, Grout and Masonry Liquid Sealer - seems similar to shower plug any other suggestions for fixing up the bathroom? all i need is cheap and effective! thanks in advance Re: sealing leaking bathroom- short term fix 2Nov 23, 2015 9:32 pm Hi mate. I have used coc shower plug on heaps of showers over this way and it work well. Has a 10 yr warranty as you all ready know. I haven't used any other but in saying that if you dont care about the looks and you want a sure fix have a look at ardex wpm 908 membrane Re: sealing leaking bathroom- short term fix 3Nov 24, 2015 5:36 am I would be surprised if just sealing the grout will stop you water issues. Grout is very hard an not flexiable at all. As your house moves(expands and contracts with different weather conditions and seasons) the grout can crack or move. This is why the water proof membrane is done prior to laying the screed before tiling. When you have a shower most of the water flows down the drain at tile level but a bit of it penetrates the grout and tiles and makes its way down to the membrane level where it then goes down the drain. To seal the tiles properly so that no water got past them I believe you would need a proper membrane over both the tiles and the grout. Is there such a membrane? All the membranes i have seen are the undertile ones. What would the likes of 'Mega seal' use to seal it?
