Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 09, 2015 1:33 pm Hi everyone, I'm wondering whether a glass screen (fixed, frameless, 2000mmx750mm) for the shower will differ in quality between say Euroglass and one I buy at Bunnings or similar. I suppose it will, but any tips on what to look for? Also, recs for supply and install in Brisbane? Euroglass have quoted over $700, this seems a lot, right? Or worth it for better quality product and installation vs buying something from elsewhere and having it installed by someone else. I don't know which locals are any good, any recommendations? Thanks Re: Frameless shower glass panel - does quality vary? Bris r 2Sep 09, 2015 6:56 pm There is a real problem in society or with business here in Australia if someone has to come to an online forum to ask that question. There is nothing wrong with your question, but you shouldn't have to come and ask a forum full of armchair experts that question. Any self respecting installer must be able to tell you why you should choose the product they supply rather than the ones available at Bunnings. Saying that, there are some expensive shower screens at Bunnings, which are better than anything ive come across in a fancy bathroom store. One thing I have found with hardware store screens, is that the glass is porous or easily stained by water/soap scum. I think this may have something to do with the quality of the hardening process. If something is Australian made, the manufacturer really wants it to be a good seller and not result in any complaints or warranty issues. Chinese imports on the other hand are simply so cheap that the entire supply chain can just honour warranties and cover the cost with bulk sales revenue. For that reason, glass manufactured locally will always turn out better. Re: Frameless shower glass panel - does quality vary? Bris r 3Sep 14, 2015 12:52 pm Agree with almost everything above. Any self respecting glazier should be able to talk to you about why you should buy glass from him rather than China. If they can't do that, then get rid of them. I'm in Melbourne so I don't know anyone up there to help you out. Burning glass will be dead square, your base and walls won't be. This means ugly gaps and joins. Chinese glass has a higher "frag count" allowable than ours, meaning if it does break, larger pieces more likely to injure you. Chinese glass also has nickel-sulfide inclusions at a higher rate than aussie stuff, meaning more chance of a random breakage for no apparent reason. If I offered you a Mercedes for $20, would you trust it to keep your family safe on the road? Bris r 5Oct 28, 2015 10:33 pm At the end of the day a lot of glazing companies buy sheets of glass which are made in china, america, europe and the middle east and nowadays not much glass still manufactured here. The off the shelf products in these stores still have to meet our Australian Standards for Toughened Glass Products. The only difference if you need it cut out of square to suit your walls and special sizes. Treat the glass after its installed with Rain Ex from supercheap auto and it will stop the build up, do it every 6 months and you will have no problem. 2 4715 Approvals are covered in the cost we are paying to the pool company.
