Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 13, 2015 2:46 pm Hi, We had our balcony / deck waterproofed and tiled 4 years ago and it has now developed a leak. In order to get the builder to take action we have had to go to Fair Trading. The builder performed some work to the perimeter of the deck to try and address the issue but it has not. Their new plan is to do further testing, and if there is still an issue then they say the final answer would be to waterproof over the existing tiles and re-tile on top of that. Is this an appropriate thing to do? The builder has become aggressive so I want to know if they are playing by the book doing this or if they are taking short cuts that will put my home at further risk. Thanks Re: External Balcony - waterproofing and tiling over existin 2Jul 13, 2015 9:16 pm There is no single membrane for application to glazed tiles, so this is not good enough. If they are to do this properly, it will be more complicated to do this on top of existing tiles, than to simply replace and re-membrane. they would need somethign like this to go on the tiles http://www.parchem.com.au/construction/ ... mer/i/403/ followed by a waterborne membrane like this http://www.parchem.com.au/construction/ ... eal/i/408/ then a 2 pack tile adhesive which again will be very costly, followed by new tiles. If they rip up the existing ones, it will be: a. 100% waterproof, b. half the cost of supplies, c. future proof I think you should take this information and do your builder a favour and educate them! Re: External Balcony - waterproofing and tiling over existin 3Jul 13, 2015 9:30 pm Thanks for that, that info is great. Just a follow up if I may. The original substrate was cement sheeting. This cement sheeting was not waterproofed and did not have it's junctions sealed. They put down a sheet of forticom on top of this concrete sheeting, then put down a concrete screed on that, then a waterproof membrane on top, the tiled. If I am to ask them to remove the tiles, should I also be saying they should go back to the cement sheeting layer and waterproof that substrate before re-applying the screed and waterproofing on top of that? Just trying to work out what the 'right' way is to do it. Thanks Re: External Balcony - waterproofing and tiling over existin 4Jul 14, 2015 9:23 am Your issue has become complicated because tradies have done one job over another over another etc. When I was building fulltime we used to always strip anything back to the frame and start again as per rb86 above whether that was floors or walls, internal or external unless there was a strong argument to do otherwise. That way you know what you are dealing with from the get go and a lot less factors to negatively affect the job in hand. Stewie Re: External Balcony - waterproofing and tiling over existin 5Jul 14, 2015 2:59 pm Nah waterfroofing should be the last step before tiling. All screeds should be done first. AS4654.2-2012 External Membranes it is "Informative" but if you get water ingress your insurance assessor will go to this straight away and if not achieved, they will deny… 9 2406 Hi, I'm clearing the tiles from our horrid 50 year old bathroom and preparing to lay new ones. Bugger of a job getting the old… 0 8246 just pull up the slate. If you go over the top, your tiles would not have an even surface to be glued to. Im no tiler, but i can imagine a couple of things being an issue… 1 617 |
