Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jun 30, 2015 12:36 pm Hi, I was wondering if someone on here would be able to give some advice. From doing some background reading on this forum, it appears our bathroom may not have been waterproofed properly. The reason I am suggesting this is that there are holes in the grout and since they have appeared I have heard dripping water into the roof space. We have stopped using the shower and have allowed it to dry out for several weeks. I was wondering if the best solution is to regrout the whole shower floor?? Is this something that is within the capability of a basic DIYer. Can I just plug the hole with something?? There is also a lot of black mould (despite regular cleaning), I am interested in re-grouting to get rid of this as well. I have attached photos. Water proofing in wa what I have been told has a warranty for 10 years .but what looks like is happening with yours is the grout and silicon had come out in places allowing water to get behind . But I'm not a expert though .hopefully you can get some advice on here Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 3Jun 30, 2015 12:46 pm Please to do not re grout ! Your problem is much greater than a tub of grout from Bunnings. Firstly any form of mould is a health hazard. The acceptable level of asbestos in the air in your home is equal to 1 part per million. the acceptable level of mould in your home is ZERO parts per million. Most likely all of the damage has already been done and luckily you haven't had any of the gyprock below start to rot out. Your best bet is to re do the bathroom. I say bathroom because your water proofing membrane actually extends outside of just the shower on the walls and includes the entire floor of the wet area. so by jus removing the shower tiles and re membrane the shower you could be missing where the leak is actually happening. There have been thousands of houses across austral with your problem, crap contractors and a builder that doesn't regulate quality, it give all of us a bad name. Hope this was of some help. Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 4Jun 30, 2015 12:50 pm Thank you for your honest and prompt advice. Do you think the mould is related to the bad waterproofing or bad ventilation in the room or something else we have done?? I remember seeing the waterproofing covering the whole bathroom floor. Is there a way I can tell that the waterproofing was done in the incorrect order or is it obvious from the information I have provided. Is it the tiler that I should be following up with or the builder?? Thanks Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 5Jun 30, 2015 1:01 pm This might sound over the top but I dry the floor after everyone has finish the shower .i have been here for 1 year no mould .except in the corner of one shower which I think is leaking some water in I have contacted my builder because I wipe the shower 5 min later water builds up .they hopefully will come out soon . It does get quite steamy on the bathroom I have my exhaust fan on but more noice than anything if it gets to steamy I do open the window .i also leave exhaust fan running 10 min or so after shower is used . I think it could be a bit of both with your shower but I would be chasing your builder about your grout falling out .they do say that silicon should be replaced every year or around there . I haven't replaced mine . Maybe give in a good exit mould and see what happens but again you will need to sort out the grout and silicon issue first Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 6Jul 01, 2015 9:40 am I notice in the bottom photo, where the grout is nice and smooth there is no mould. One could possibly deduce that the grout is more of a problem than just a poor job and the erosion of the grout could indicate the grout is of a less than required soundness to shed the water and prevent mould from appearing. For a few hours work with a grout rake(from the hardware store) and a $5 bag of grout I know what I'd be doing. I would bleach the mould with sodium hypo rake out the old grout that is loose and of poor quality and re grout properly. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 7Jul 02, 2015 11:42 pm Thx. So 2 votes for redoing bathroom (gulp) and 1 for a regrout!! Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 8Aug 13, 2015 10:51 am any update on what you did? Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 9Aug 21, 2015 5:46 pm Hi
Oh dear that is not looking to good. The reason for grout missing is because there must be movement and there is a void under the grout for some reason. Hard to tell but please call me on 0403 33 26 46 for more info so I can help you. I also noticed silicon missing in certain areas. Even if we had no silicon or grout the water proofing should do it`s job. Craig Re: Shower leak and mould - regrouting? 10Sep 02, 2015 10:29 am I had the exactly the same problem with my shower area a couple of months ago. Pieces of grout came out, there was a lot of mould at in between the shower tiles and the water from the shower area leaked through to the wall behind the bathroom. The landlord initially called someone to re-grout the shower area. Unfortunately, the problem was still there. So in the end, the landlord had to get someone to re-do the shower area from scratch. It turned out that there was a leak from one of the pipes connected to the shower. After the shower area was completely re-done, I no longer have any problem with it and it’s completely waterproof. This certainly doesn't look good. I would be engaging with an independent inspector to have a look at this.
