Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 20, 2015 4:25 pm Can anyone here post pictures of their rectified tile jobs and mitered edges.
we are not happy with our builders job on the tiles, we have quite a few tiles not flat (can run credit card over the joints and get stuck) and some joints are not even (like they are not butted up against the joiners properly) The mitered edges look terrible, some are out quite a bit some joints are done with grout and some with silicon. ive never seen silicon used before on any other jobs, this is inbetween the small gap of the miter edge. be good to see peoples mitered edges and experiences with tiles not being flat/whats acceptable, they are telling me the allowance is 2mm for the tile to be sticking out too far per tile before its not ok, they are saying the tiles must be bowed/curved and thats why its like it, which is rubbish, its the install. they are 600x300 tiles. videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0od3z1a4Rk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BDy6eZtaWc Pictures http://imgur.com/a/pkHPp Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 2May 20, 2015 5:15 pm Some photos would help. Depending on the manufacturers of the tiles , your builder may have a point. I've seen some cheap and nasty tiles slightly different lengths but straight as a die then I've seen much more expensive tiles exactly the same length but have a 2 -3mm bow in them. Were these tiles laid in a brick pattern ? Stewie Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 3May 20, 2015 8:41 pm Stewie is right, Tiles can be bowed and the sizing can vary. This is usually the case with cheaper tiles. I've heard of silicone in the mitres before, it won't fall out or crack like grout will. Mitres are very hard if not impossible to get perfect. You will no doubt also see some fine chipping or roughness of the glaze where the back edge was backed off Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 4May 20, 2015 9:16 pm not laid in brick pattern, tiler didnt use a leveling system either. have to get some pictures, i think the bowing is a cop out, as the ones that are easily fixed(close to a wall/corner) have offerd to pull 1/2 off, but the ones in the middle of wall its 'normal'. every job ive seen with friends is pretty flawless. is there a tool i can place on the tile to check if it is bowed? disappointing as ive paid over 10k in labor on top of normal labor to lay these. as for the miters ill get pics, as its shocking.the miters go to the ceiling with the tiles, from the flloor some start with grout, then goes to silicon then goes to grout, its a mix in the same motar line, some of the tiles on the end piece (double miter) are pushed in and the side tile edge sticks out more then the flat edge of the end tile. its like they pressed it on too hard for some of them Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 6May 21, 2015 7:22 am To find out if individual tiles are bowed just get a piece of steel like a steel ruler the same length and lay it on its edge over the tile. If the tiles are bowed you should be able to rock the ruler when you press down on each end. Who supplied the tiles - you or the builder ? Stewie Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 8May 21, 2015 4:26 pm Here's a pic from today. Tiles are 600 X 600. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/bigjon_72/IMG_1580_zps5x5ksv8n.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/bigjon_72/IMG_1581_zpsrga21bk5.jpg Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 9May 26, 2015 12:42 am i can tell you why this happened. You picked large tiles and the builder's tiler doesnt do large tiles!! The tiler probably saw them, had a little cry to himself then just sucked up his pride and attempted it. Large tiles are incredibly unforgiving. you should have to pay about 1.5 times the cost of a normal tile job when they are that big. They are HUGE. Got any pics of this silicone/grout job? Sounds like u may have a good case to suggest they employed the wrong tiler for the job. Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 10Jun 02, 2015 4:11 pm i paid over 11k extra in labor, thats EXTRA ontop of allowance for normal tiling and paid extra to tile to ceiling. So i believe we paid the required amount for a good job. so paid 1. Normal tiling standard heights 2. extra as we went to ceiling 3. paid over 11k to tile using rectified and larger size. 4. paid alot more to upgrade tiles as well, not included in above prices. they used 3mm spacers when we asked for 1.5mm several times, apparently as it was not written down what to use, we get 3mm tough luck. videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0od3z1a4Rk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BDy6eZtaWc Pictures http://imgur.com/a/pkHPp Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues 11Jun 02, 2015 4:40 pm nafem i paid over 11k extra in labor, thats EXTRA ontop of allowance for normal tiling and paid extra to tile to ceiling. One was 'lipping' which was when tiles were used on a wall the weight may cause the tile to move. The rep didnt explain how much but I think they may advise that in your case it would be considered lipping. I'd be asking if they used a different glue to ensure the tile didnt slip As for 1.5mm, Beaumonts advised 3mm is the Australian standard for walls and 2mm for floors(or it might be other way around) and all the tiler has to do is meet those standards even if you want 1.5mm - we want 1.5 as well so hoping our tiler plays ball. Overall I would be unhappy as well and would be fighting to get it fixed. This was one of the reasons we wanted our own tiler to do flooring however as we are using our floor tile in our laundry and toilet we wanted to ensure the batches were the same so are getting Coral to lay the rest. edit: Looking at picture 7 and 8 is that showing the tile is off centre and more to the right allowing the edge of the wall tile on the left to remain in view but hides the edge of the tile on the right? Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues *UPDATED PICS/ 12Jun 02, 2015 4:40 pm Just looked at your pictures - wow, that looks like really poor workmanship. For what it's worth, we just had our bathroom tiled using 600 x 100 rectified tiles on the walls, floor to ceiling. Our house is 50 years old and the walls are far from square and straight, yet you can run your credit card across the tiles with not even a bump - the tiler did a great job. Judging by your photographs it looks like the work of a DIY handyman, not a professional tiler. I have renovated 3 bathrooms in my life prior to this one, and done the tiling myself, and did a much better job than what I see in your photos, and I am just an amateur weekend warrior. The reason I employed a professional tiler for this bathroom was primarily because of the rectified tiles and the unforgiving nature of them. Glad I did. Sorry yours turned out to be a dud... Our walls have 1.5mm spaces. We did not have mitre edges, and I would never have mitred edges. We used chrome "L" profile edge strips on all external edges. Looks fantastic and will protect against chipping etc. All the best with the builder...that workmanship is not acceptable and you should not have to accept that sort of garbage in a new home. I think you would have valid argument taking it to your local building commission if your builder doesn't go in to bat for you. The right thing to do is rip them all out and start again. Id stress to the builder and have it in writing that the tiler MUST contact you and be on site with you before work commences. so you dont have the same issues as me, also check if tiler is using a leveling system as shown by lynneB as they did not use those wedges etc on my job, was standard 3mm spaces and done by eye. I also went through beaumonts but they said the paper work is differnt as they didnt supply the tiler my builder did, but beaumonts said all my grout size issues would not of happened if they supplied as that is a question that gets asked "grout width" in selections. I also was the same, we asked to use own tiler and get tiles from another place as beaumont tiles selection/quallity is quite poor compared to some of the high end tile places. we are doing 1.5mm for all floor tiles in house 600x600 using leveling system and own tiler. Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues *UPDATED PICS/ 14Jun 02, 2015 6:50 pm Rip it off, start again. That is not even an amateurs job, that is not a qualified tiler I assure you. There should be no question, you shouldn't even be on this forum. Go back to builder and show them! Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues *UPDATED PICS/ 16Jun 03, 2015 12:21 pm does anyone know who i contact as builder said its a good job....... hate to see a bad one I have emailed the tile council and will contact and pay a building inspector to also look at it. Is there a government body i can contact? consumer affairs? i was going to contact HIA but from what i have read they protect their members more then the consumer. Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues *UPDATED PICS/ 17Jun 03, 2015 2:33 pm a god job??? The tiles up that wall end are cut to random widths and some hang over and some cut under. What a joke... Re: rectified tiles and mitered joints issues *UPDATED PICS/ 18Jun 03, 2015 6:55 pm The builder probably got his labourer to do it. That's how bad it is. What state are you in? I would suggest asking if you can have edge tiles removed at least and some angle used to look neater than that butcher mitre job. As for the lipping I guess it could be lived with but its still not nice at least not floors where can stub toe. Our tiler used level system on all wall and floor tiles. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/C6622875-B208-4161-ADD6-7FF243ED403D_zpshmsiok4b.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/shower_zpsibtugypf.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/31BBEF4F-2AA3-4D68-A984-FBEF06244796_zpsvkxemx5v.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/A9BEE891-C493-4678-BAB2-000210EE1A83_zpsskuntmpq.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/5F7A146F-9048-44E8-B5F2-C26141277B0B_zps9tw7o6uc.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/FC07879A-F392-4402-927A-A1F86BCBAE14_zpsfz1ruddp.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/9F434B80-3411-4CAC-8CAD-D80503FC48CE_zpsaifhxb6r.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/C42ABF96-88F8-41A2-B2FC-936466216AA4_zps1b0imrgv.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b38/njectme/Forever%20House/8F0CF457-1C6F-4FFF-B9C3-9EDE60CDC6DB_zps5xyjo4a8.jpg Hi All, First time poster. I was hoping to get some advice on villaboard installation within a bathroom. I have installed villaboard before, in a laundry.
