Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 15, 2015 2:02 pm Hi All, I would like the reduce the flow of the shower water. This is in the kids shower and they dont understand the concept of a quick shower.. sometimes i think they fall asleep in the shower! With this in mind, i was wondering how i would go about reducing the flow of water out the shower? If i could reduce the flow I'm sure HEAPS of water could be saved. Interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks, Robbie Re: Controlling shower flow 2Feb 15, 2015 2:19 pm I did find this, which is said to control flow between 2-12 l/pm: http://www.bunnings.com.au/hydrosave-ch ... -_p4950012 Do you think this would work and how would u adjust the flow? Re: Controlling shower flow 5Feb 15, 2015 7:48 pm Yes it would work. If you look at most shower heads they are listed at 9L/min. This is to get the water saving rating. If you actually pull the head off of them they actually have a flow restrictor in them. I'ts usually a small red plastic disc. You can pull this disc out to get it back to 18L/min. The one you linked to the bunnings site just looks like a bigger bulkier version, but it would do the same job Re: Controlling shower flow 6Feb 15, 2015 10:28 pm You're looking at the wrong end of the problem. Put a timer on when they shower and when the bell goes off, turn off the hot water at the tank. You'll be surprised at how fast they can be trained. And short showers will become a life long habit. Re: Controlling shower flow 7Feb 16, 2015 6:40 am Control the children, not the water flow rate, put a timer in the shower. Teach them how to use it. Make sure they use the timer and limit their shower time to the set timer time limit. If that doesn't work, I like the ""turn off hot water" idea. Re: Controlling shower flow 9Feb 16, 2015 9:55 am robbie_p Thanks guys... What would you consider a acceptable amount of time in the shower taking into consideration that the water is flowing continuously? Between 3-5 minutes unless you have long hair and need a shampoo and conditioner routine I believe, then an extension of that shower time will be needed. Re: Controlling shower flow 10Feb 16, 2015 3:48 pm i have the same problem at my house i timed my son once at 45 minutes i have threatened to fit timers to the hotwater pipe if they dont curb their times http://www.showertimer.com.au/specifications.html Re: Controlling shower flow 11Feb 16, 2015 5:33 pm I can definitely attest that cold showers make for quick showers! (I'm doing cold showers for supposed health benefits for now but have noticed shorter showers ) Re: Controlling shower flow 12Feb 16, 2015 7:50 pm I fitted a flow`restrictor and reduced the mains (which was on full flow), and the flow rate went from 18 l/m to 6l/pm All the other taps were unaffected. I also time showers now by turning off water at mains after 4 mins.. until the kids get into habit of short showers. I tried to find the flow restrictor /tap from the hot water system (to cut off hot water supply), but i couldnt find it. There was a insulated copper outlet pipe going from HWS into house, but no flow control.. any ideas where it is? There isn't usually one on the out going pipe Re: Controlling shower flow 15Feb 18, 2015 2:18 pm It's a mains pressure unit. It relies on the mains pressure pushing the water through. Without the mains water pushing into it it's basically a big bucket of hot water. Ever turned the water off at the mains to change a tap washer? Both lines stop. This may be different if you have a roof mounted storage tank as the gravity will keep pulling the water out Good luck with it. I don't know what the cost of a nice bidet seat with a 25mm air gap will be but you are obviously deducting the cost of a RPZ valve and its… 9 6935 You may still have a case, but your next step is to speak to a lawyer. 3 1574 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
