Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 25, 2014 12:09 am Hi everyone, I am needing to choose basins for bathrooms and have been thinking of purchasing vessels in order to achieve more benchtop space. Does anyone have feedback on the possible advantages/disadvantages of tempered glass vs vitreous china or porcelain vessels? Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 2Nov 25, 2014 12:48 am I think you should do whatever takes your fancy. I am myself partial to "exmar" or concrete for wash basins. As for space, I think that a table top basin is false economy, as you will gain very little table top space even if they are tapered towards the table, and that you could have drawers or cupboards up to the top of basin, if they are built into the table (i.e. the table top will have to be lower, relatively speaking if you choose a wash basin that goes on top). Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 3Nov 25, 2014 7:06 pm As above, basin design comes down to personal taste. Vessel basins usually require a slightly lower bench height. They can help gain abit of space in the cabinet design, around drawers. What do you like the look of? I find a semi inset basin, or a vessel that sits half in, and half out to be more appealing. Quality is like buying oats. If you want good, fresh oats, you'll pay a fair price. However,if you can be satisfied with the oats that have already been through the horse, that comes a little cheaper. Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 4Nov 25, 2014 7:12 pm Thanks for your input. I was actually hoping to get some comparisons between the materials. Is it easier to clean one material more than another? What about chipping or scratching? Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 6Nov 27, 2014 4:30 pm Melsie they are ones that look like a bowl sitting on top of the sink ( a fancy name for basins!) I went and picked all my bathroom stuff today, what fun, with one drawback, I needed to see the bath in person cos I've matched everything to it....and they didn't have one on display. I am going for organic, clean lines but the bath is like a round within a rectangle. I really, really wanted freestanding, but can't find one that will fit the bathroom (or the one that does is sooooo narrow)... I've had a bit of work over the last few weeks with one school and now a different one for next week, it's a foot in the door to regular work, whoo hoo! just had to share Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 7Nov 27, 2014 6:45 pm OK then .so they are like mine in my ensuite .yeh like vessel ones better . I think if you can't go freestanding bath .I like the round within the rectangle . I have it in my bathroom .tress this is going to be one stunning rental.congrats on the work front . Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 8Nov 29, 2014 6:00 pm Thanks Melsie!! We still have to maintain a tight budget, cos you can't eat your house But no stranger to budgeting either. I've been looking on line for glass vessels as I would LOVE turquoise ones, but the shipping is a killer Anyone know who does them in Perth for a reasonable price? (ie under $300)? Re: Pros & Cons of Bathroom Basins 10Dec 07, 2014 4:31 pm Splashers If you need bench space than the best option i think is undermount style basins. Easier to clean and gives a far better look more clutter free. I agree, if we were having stone benchtops it would be the best way to go. However we have been advised not to do stone in a rental.
