Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 11, 2014 6:56 pm Hi, Im a newbie so I hope this hasnt been covered before, I did have a quick look. I am renovating an old early 1900's house that has a suspended concrete floor in the bathroom. I got my plumber over to cut some core holes for the services and he suggested that I support or prop the floor before he uses the core hole drill as he was afraid that the vibration might crack the slab. He jumped up and down to prove a point. It doesnt overly vibrate when you jump up and down, no more than usual based on my previous house. Any suggestions on how to support the floor and what to use? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. cheers Re: supporting an old suspended concrete floor 2Nov 11, 2014 7:45 pm He is probably right. Some of the old mixed on site slabs were not of the highest quality and left a lot to be desired strength wise. Some on the other hand were pretty good. How far is it down to the ground from the underside of the slab ? If you are only talking 2 - 4 feet then a temporary 100 x 50 to the underside of the slab supported by two more vertically onto a 200 x 50 baseplate on the ground would do. All you need is something to take a bit of the weight while he cuts the holes. Stewie Re: supporting an old suspended concrete floor 5Nov 12, 2014 1:47 pm To add to what qebtel is saying, how much does it vibrate when you jump on it ? Our bathroom floor is a suspended slab too but doesn't vibrate at all when I jump on it partly because it is 150mm thick, really strong concrete and it is supported all round on a dwarf brick wall. How is your plumber going to cut the core holes ? If he is just going to jackhammer a hole through that could be asking for trouble. Some additional brick piers on a concrete pad, as qebtel says might be a better permanent solution if the slab strength is iffy. Stewie Fair Trading can issue orders to rectify and complete but once the matter goes to NCAT these orders are automatically vacated.
