Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 24, 2014 8:38 pm We have just started a bathroom renovation with a bathroom company. When we were in the planning phases the designer said that the tiles we chose would look great and work well with mitred edges around bulit in bath, set in louvre windows and a nib wall in shower. The tiler has just come and said he thinks we should think really seriously about the mitred edges as he feels we wont be happy with them. He is happy to do what we choose but suggested plastic ot steel edging would be better, he said the mitred edges would be too sharp. Would really appreciate any feedback you have on what you have chosen and how they are wearing, particularly from those who have had them for a while. We bought our tiles from the bathroom company so they knew what tiles they would be mitreing. Just really upset that this has been raised now and wondering which way i should go. Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 2Sep 25, 2014 8:02 am Mitred is a lot more work and harder to get right. That's the only reason he wants you to go with the edging. Stand your ground and stick with mitred. The only reason mitred might be sharp is a poor job. Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 3Sep 25, 2014 10:57 am Yes and no JB1. We've done bathroom renos with mitred external joins and despite the fact we used a really good tiler some of those corners still didn't look too flash. Other jobs he did for us those corners looked great. Sometimes it comes down to the the tiles you have chosen. Some tilers will do a crappy job on those joins no matter what tiles you choose. If there is a texture or wave to the surface of the tile that has a lot of bearing on the final result likewise if the cut corners are brittle. Choose your tiles carefully. Stewie Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 4Sep 25, 2014 7:47 pm I've just had this same issue with a client who wanted mitered corners. A bit of history on them. Years ago when basically the only tile used in bathrooms were 200x200 ceramic. A bathroom may have had a bath hob or a half height nib wall between the bath and the shower. These tiles came to site with one edge already mitered so it was no big deal to lay them. Then we had the issue of grout falling out and the unprotected edge chipping and cracking, so the plastic tile trim was introduced. These have been modernized with different styles and materials. Then along comes a designer who thinks it would be a nice look to miter the sort of tiles being used today in bathrooms. So back to our client. They were adamant they wanted mitered tiles, my 2 regular tilers both with experienced and very good tradesman would not do it. In an attempt to exhaust all avenues I rang an old tiler who's been in the game for over 35yrs. He works for a builder doing high end multi $M houses. I asked him how he would price it if he were to do it, his response " I wouldn't, the same reason we stopped doing it years ago is the exact same reason I wont do it now" End result is the owners have picked a polished chrome tile trim and are wrapped. Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 5Sep 25, 2014 8:42 pm I have full height tiling in all wet areas .I have mitred around window seals .and baths .I think they d8d a pretty good job . Some areas probley could of done a bit better . But over all it looks good . But have also heard that sometimes it is impossible to do mitered .it was on the block the other night .the judges commented on the boys tiler using a strip than mitreing it . I think either way they look good .but if you can mitre it .then I would . Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 6Sep 25, 2014 9:33 pm We went through the same thing I said to our tiler I want mitred he would do it but suggested the trim .....we went brushed metal trim and love it. Our tiler's wasn't the cheapest had come with recommendations and we had also checked out his work .....in the end I'm really happy we went the trim viewtopic.php?t=62083 Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 7Sep 25, 2014 10:14 pm Mitred or jollied tiles look cleaner and neater than the trims. IMHO When you pay good money for expensive tiles and then run an ali tile trim down the corners it can look a bit cheap. It's far more seamless to mitre around the corners. With modern glues and grouts you should not have issues with grout falling out and then chipping corners. There's not a whole pile of hard items being moved around in bathrooms so the idea if damaging the corners is fairly remote. Any decent tiler should be able to deliver nice straight mitred edges. It's just easier to use a trim hence the reason lots of tilers don't want to do mitres. The only issue can be highly textured tiles and even then if it's a uniform pattern and the tiler is good it can be done. My tiler uses a brick saw with the blade angled and water cut the finish is great. Re: Help.Advice on tile mitres, tiler now says it wont look 9Sep 26, 2014 11:50 pm I think it depends on the look of your bathroom and what outcome you are after. I have metal trim on my tiles and it looks amazing. 9 24814 Regardless of wall hung toilet or floor pan toilet your feet will be right on drain, seems to me the waste should not be in that location given the design.
