Jo I also noticed that when going down the building track - or the towel rail was so far away from the shower you would be dry by the time you reached it! Paula Re: Room with a view 23Jun 04, 2008 10:49 am It's funny that often the more expensive and 'designer' that things are, the less practical they are.
Surely *really* good design would be both visually stunning AND a lesson in ergonomics and functionality ? Something which simply looks good, but has reduced functionality is a dismal design failure. These people should receive a giant kick up the rear rather than be excused by claiming it's somehow all about the design. This problem is most easily seen in websites. A visually stunning website is quickly recognised as rubbish if you can't figure out how to navigate through the pages. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Room with a view 24Jun 04, 2008 12:03 pm joles As to_do_list said, what about the toilet paper? It sounds mundane until your stuck on the toilet without it! To be fair the toilet paper holder is there on the other side of the room from the toilet.....it looks like 4 x 300 mm tiles away...not very practical. : joles I actually think this is really encouraging for the rest of us! Great design is nothing to do with how much money you throw at a project. It's all about smart choices with functionality being the key, and sometimes the best examples of this are to be found in what would be considered lower end projects. Jo Thoroughly agree...which is the reason I troll through the real estate ads picking in particularly on the inner suburban ones....you pick up on some really clever design or landscaping ideas....making big spaces out of small. We bought a modest 25 square (dwelling area) house because it has the character, warmth, and potential to be what we imagined "home" to be like. We want to modernise certain aspects (mainly kitchen and a little bit on the wet areas) but still maintain the original character we fell in love with.....but we aren't "made of money". There are some really good examples of where this has been done. The dunny I put up is ridiculous, but imagine that light well and garden in a lounge. That starts me thinking about skylights in our raked ceilings. It's amazing how people are able to get light into houses which are clearly poorly orientated or have no windows using light wells, skylights, windowed gable ends....etc. Which is why I'll post ideas like this to get feedback - both on the practical and aesthetic. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Room with a view 25Jun 04, 2008 6:38 pm Quote: OK smarty....house may be a million bucks but where's the damn toilet paper....! Well said tdl. Actually using a bathroom that connects you with nature is a very nice experience. One of nature nuture. IMO - This one tries to do it - but.... Really misses the connection. Too sterile and not enough connection - in summer whne the climber is in full leaf yeah maybe - but not just when it's a vine on the wall. and the fake veneer - yep - really out of place IMO. At least 50% of displays have nowhere to put a towel rail! What the...? Jo hmm both great points. IN this current rental which was a brand new build in may last year the designers didn't seem to plan very well for towel rails or loo paper holders. the ensuite is so small the only place for a towel rail is right next to the loo bowl. To fit it they have placed the toilet paper holder deep back on the wall. Unfortunately the open end of the loo paper roll points outwards. so each time you reach back to level with the cistern to get loo paper and pull.. it pulls off the holder. duh.. and NO we do not dare hang our towels on the towel rail. We have one of those foldable, wire, plastic coated clothes drying rack things set up permanently in our shower( in between showers obviously) to drape our towels on. every morning it's a juggle to get the damn thing out of the shower and find a space to place it while you shower. Oh well another 10mnths and it won't be our problem. Thank goodness it's not our house. The towel rail issue is a real bugbear of mine. I became so conscious of it whenever we went through display homes. The ensuite seems to be the primary problem area. The thing is people are so overwhelmed by decoration, tiling, atmosphere, etc that they just forget to look for the practicalities. No offence but your set up doesn't sound particularly hygeinic. I'd go nuts! Jo xxxx (for you Michelle, I got them off Ash!) I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Room with a view 30Jun 04, 2008 9:42 pm Joles. It's annoying. but as its a rental I can live with it. Took the only rental available here sight unseen. At least its a new house.
If we were stuck living in it for a long time I think I'd consider the wooden ladder rail I've seen in a couple of bathroom posts on here. I think our current temp arrangement works as well as the ladder would for drying. Not ideal and very annoying though. I was a bit critical of towel rail issues when we met with our builder's rep (who happens to have built this rental). I made a big fuss about having plenty of space for towel rails. Hadn't realised just how many times I'd commented until he asked why i was always going on about where they'd be located in each bathroom. Thought I'd horrify Joles some more. Yes that is our ensuite. Awful isn't it. I might not go nuts.. but I curse every morning when I have to lift the temp towel rack out of the shower. The space is pretty narrow. Still the chance someone is doing there guttering one day when you are clearing your spouting is a little off putting ... but its not like you are putting on a show every night. I would more be concerned with how freezing cold that would be with all that glass. Re: Room with a view 35Jun 05, 2008 1:21 pm sirgoat Still the chance someone is doing there guttering one day when you are clearing your spouting is a little off putting Is that a euphemism? I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's amazing what can be done in turns of getting light into areas and making better use of space. It's amazing how some small/medium house can feel as spacious as large ones. I also love some of the courtyard ideas in these houses, whilst I have no shortage of backyard incorporating some of the ideas could allow me to create a more intimate area in one part of the garden, yet still keep most of it for kids playground. sirgoat We are finishing our narrow hours at the moment, the biggest thing we have done differently is the open living at the back one day i will get around to photo, there are some brilliant options out there, i really really want a warehouse preferably multi story so i can muck around with light wells and such ...
