Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 20, 2014 8:35 pm Our bathroom quote has two shower screens of $1000 each and I'm trying to bring the overall price of our home down. I would absolutely love frameless shower screens but I'm thinking that maybe a tiled wall would be a cheaper option. Has anyone got photos of a shower like this, does it work well, do you like it etc, do you think it's a cheaper option compared to the glass shower screen? Any thoughts appreciated, thanks Loving our new home, Upper Hunter NSW on 2.5 acres Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 2Jul 20, 2014 10:41 pm Are you talking about tiled walls, so you have walls on 3 sides, then some kind of screen / shower curtain? The bathroom light is in the wrong position and it's dark. It makes the bathroom feel smaller, out of date. What if you did half height brick wall, 1.2m then frameless glass? Would that work out cheaper? Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 4Jul 21, 2014 11:29 pm I personally wouldn't unless you have a window in the shower space. Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 5Jul 22, 2014 1:56 am I have that exact arrangement for 3 showers in my build. Two of them have windows and one doesn't. All have decent lighting though. I am not sure that it will be that much cheaper than frameless though. For example, in our master the wall is 2m x 1.5m that means there is tiling totalling 6m plus the 190mm by 2m plus 190mm by 1.5m... So altogether about 6.6m @ the tiling price which for me is 150/m = 990. The other two will be not far off given that one is 1.4 long and the other is 1m long, all are 2m high by 190mm. My thought was that the wall provides some privacy and since there is plenty of light I was not too bothered. Hehe but I will reconfirm the lighting for the shower without a window. BTW I like the pic you attached.... gives me more ideas Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 6Jul 22, 2014 8:28 am We paid $1000 for our shower screen in our last build. This time Dh went to a bathroom shop and purchased a sheet of glass and installed it himself. It cost about $350. Looks just as good to me. Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 7Jul 22, 2014 9:44 am I'm having a half-height screen in my guest bathroom, against my will because even though the shower space has a window, the vanity otherwise would not get any natural light. Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 8Jul 22, 2014 11:55 am Ours is a walk in shower with a wall and bath on opposite side. It does have a gap at top to allow steam to escape (there is an exhaust fan above bath) and let in some natural light. Also has an led light inside. I love it, easy to use, easy to keep clean. We use a long handled squeegee to remove excess water from floor, open window and run exhaust for 15 minutes after showering. After 4 months no sign of mold. It seems much easier to keep clean and you can put a nice niche in the wall as seen in the small picture at the bottom. We used large format feature tiles on the wall. We also have a waterproof down light over the shower. The wall is about 1.8m high and there is plenty of light during the day. If I ever build again we will build exactly the same. Are those tiles stone or ceramic. I am looking to have the similar set up and I like the look of those tiles. Re: Wall as a Shower Screen 11Jul 22, 2014 9:53 pm Thanks everyone for your responses, that's why I love this site, so many ideas and suggestions. I agree Freakychick I think I need a larger window if I'm going to put the wall screen in. Thanks Aussiemark for your info, it really helped. My shower in the ensuite is 1.8 long, not sure how long the wall would need to be but I'm working out if it's going to cheaper than glass. Love your bathroom Snufl, a gap at the top of the wall is a good idea, so is the led light, thanks. Thanks for the photos. Your bathroom is gorgeous Chippy. Our layout is exactly the same, only difference is our vanity is not as long, shower and toilet are in the same place. I didn't know you could get waterproof down lights, great idea. I too am having a niche, they look great. After all these great ideas I'm going to work out the cost, if it saves me money I can put it towards 'over budget' kitchen. There's no obvious repeating pattern so there must be a few different patterns used. They look like travertine without the issues of natural stone. They are 1000x500 so fit on that wall and the back walls of our toilets without having vertical joins. I am pretty sure the place I am getting my stone from can do large format. I do know at one stage they were quitting out their ceramic range at crazy prices. Some of their tiles were 1200 x 600 and they were only like 20/sqm. They did not have enough to do my floors but now I think of it they may be perfect for some walls.
