Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 24, 2008 8:04 pm Ok, 2 sort of questions...
1. The tiles in my new apartment are ok, but they're just the standard boring sort of matt-look tiles...sort of pinkish of hue, and the grout is all grey and discoloured. We'd be needing to get the grout re-done at least, but I'd LOVE to have more shiny, pearlescent-type tiles...but I don't want to have to replace them or even re-tile. Is it ever possible to somehow re-enamel tiles and put like a porcelain veneer for teeth on them? To sort of just put a really shallow cover over the existing tiles to get the look of nice new tiles (and grout) but not have to actually lay new tiles down? 2. We had an area of bathroom of our current rented apartment re-grouted a while ago and it looks really bad. We don't mind cause a) it was free and b) it's not our own home, but if it WAS I'd not be happy one bit. The grout is white which is fine but it's BRIGHT white, not the nice normal fresh but not glowing white the rest of the bathroom has. And it's sort of overflowing from the near lines between the tiles to the actual tiles... Is this just poor workmanship? If we get our new bathrooms re-grouted and it comes out like that, do we have a right to complain and get it re-done or is it fairly standard to have it look like that? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Can you change tiles without replacing them? 3May 24, 2008 8:34 pm Oh yeah, I've heard of Knights paint...I know you can't paint floor tiles with it though. This is my main thing - the floor tiles. They're the ones I want changed. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Wouldn't it make the new floor level higher? Or do they sand back the existing ones so it'd be even?
I wonder how much new tiles would cost...*eyebrow raised* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Can you change tiles without replacing them? 8May 25, 2008 4:03 pm Hmm, I don't really want vinyl though. I mean, the whole reason I want new tiles if not too expensive is to get that real sparkly, shiny glassy sort of tile look, almost a slippery look, you know? You can't get that with vinyl. *picky* lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Can you change tiles without replacing them? 9May 25, 2008 4:30 pm If the tiles are in good condition, you may be very pleasantly surprised how good they can look with a make-over. That is, having a grout colorant done. Choose a colour to compliment the tiles and it can really look good. It would require that any grout is in good condition or repaired first though. Sounds like the contractor you had before did a lousy job! There are some that will paint tiles, but I wouldn't recommend it. Tiles have to be acid etched well firstly, or paint won't take to it. Other systems claim good results, but I'm really sceptical. I think if you really want the tiles to look different, your best choice is new tiles. Ash. Years ago this was not recommended, but now they have a new rubber base cement that they use and the outcome is great. Just watch that step going into the door way! You can get a really nice floor tile from around $30 per mt. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com This certainly doesn't look good.
