Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 18, 2014 11:54 pm Hi Everyone, We live southern suburbs of Perth and would really appreciate some help... we are renovating our bathroom, toilet and laundry. After getting 2 bathroom renovation companies around and getting quotes of $28,000 +, we decided we will manage it ourselves. Unfortunately we have no idea what is a reasonable rate is for a tiler so not sure if they are trying to rip us off. Background information. Bathroom (floor to ceiling) approx 33 sqm, toilet (dado height) approx 10 sqm, laundry (skirting and small section above benches) approx 14sqm. – all tiles rectified, and mitre corners. One tiler just quoted us, the following: 49 sqm @ $65 p/sqm - $3185.00 (labour only?) Screeding of bathroom, laundry and toilet & extra cuts (?) - $1250 Waterproofing (labour only) - $250 Adhesives, sand, cement, plasternex and waterproofing to shower - $650.00 Extra cuts hole / drain and mitre - $250.00 PLUS GST $558.50 = Total $6143.50 (we have to gut the room or pay someone to do this on top) Works out to be a final rate of about $126 p/sqm Is this excessive? What do tillers normally include in their sqm rate? Is it normal to charge additional for extra cuts? Why do they charge for cuts around a drain ( I am confused as to what the labour for laying the tiles is for if it does not include cutting, mitre cuts etc..) We would really appreciate it if some people can give us an idea of what a reasonable rate is and what we should expect to have included in the sqm price. Also what do tillers normally charge extra for, I assume, waterproofing and screeding (I have read on some threads it is normally around $20 - $25 sqm – we have about 36 sqm floor (I guess you don’t screed the walls?), he is quoting $35 p/sqm to screed the floors? Is this the average? The last time we hired a tiler was about 10 years ago for our main living areas and we were given a sqm rate that included the glue etc.. we only had to supply the grout and the tiles. We are not looking for the cheapest quote, we are looking for a quality tiler, we are prepared to pay a reasonable amount but I am a bit shocked by this price, or is this the norm here in Perth? Also would appreciate any recommendations for a good quality, reliable tiler, who has experience laying rectified tiles SOR. We need them to start around August / September Thank You Reno Newbies Re: HELP - wet area tiler rates SOR Perth - $126 p/sqm ? 2Apr 19, 2014 5:05 am We hired a tiler for our new build as we deleted the tiling from the building contract. The builder still did the water proofing though so no idea how much that would be. Our tiler was $50/sqm plus $1000. The extra $1000 was to cover mitre edges, metal trim to an open ensuite around the door frame, installation of smart drains, good quality adhesive. We didn't have any screeding though but were told it should roughly be 10-20 more per sqm. ours was a big job though, 100sqm of 600x600 floor tiles, 75sqm of 600x300/150x900/300x300 bathroom floor and wall tiling. All rectified. I'd shop around for sure! The other quotes we got for just the bathrooms and not including the living area was around 70-85 per sqm.
