Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 26, 2014 8:53 pm Hi all, Looking for a bit of advice on our bathroom reno. We've removed our bath so we can put a double vanity in its place. However it is below a window and we're not sure what to do about putting a mirror in its place. Ideas so far are to brick up the window, and leave a small top window for ventilation (maybe skylight to supplement light). Second idea was to build a frame over the window, with opening mirrors. Bit like a medicine cabinet. We're not too taken with either idea but are struggling to come up with anything else! Seems there aren't many vanities below windows! Have also put a pic of other side of the room (unfinished still), any suggestions for paint colours to go with the mocha / wood? Thanks! I wouldn't have a vanity under the window as a mirror is vital but losing a window is a terrible idea also in my opinion! Could you put the vanity on the wall to the left of the window? (where the towel rails are?) The little cupboard we've got in the photo is where our vanity was before - too small and behind the door so you constantly got hit in the back. Under the window was the only place we could put it.. It's definately not idea losing the window. Not sure what to do. We are planning on putting a skylight in so we will get some natural light in. Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 4Mar 28, 2014 8:15 pm Not sure of your ceiling height but our ensuite has a window above the mirror and the design works quite well. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 5Mar 29, 2014 6:49 am I'd be installing a highlight window as you mention for light and ventilation as you say then a mirror and vanity underneath as per robbie55. Seeing as you are installing a skylight, the bathroom won't be dark. What is the height from the top of the window to the floor ? A mirror should be at least to the top of your head so that will determine how tall the window can be ( unless you alter the lintel height too by another 200mm or so ). Stewie Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 7Mar 30, 2014 12:16 pm Cooper05, that setup is a pain the neck - literally because it is what we have now. Having a shave and you're bending over the bowl then you have to turn to the left, look in the mirror , take a couple of scrapes then turn back to the bowl and rinse. Repeat until done. It won't happen in our new bathrooms that's for sure ! Stewie Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 8Mar 30, 2014 2:53 pm I don't like the mirror at the side idea. Making a short high winmdow would be good. Or on one of the reno shows (House Rules) they had this problem and installed a sliding mirror in front of the window. That wayt you had a mirror but could still open the window. I think there were 2 and one slid behind the other so when they were closed you couldn't see that there was a window there. It lookedc great. Not sure how easy it would be to do. Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 9Mar 30, 2014 7:05 pm I would probably cover one half of the window with a mirror and leave mirror for the other half. I'm not a big fan of a small window up above the mirror. Such a shame to lose that natural light. Either that or do a mirror on the side wall with one of those shaving mirrors on an arm that can be positioned in front of you when needed. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 11Mar 31, 2014 8:29 am From a design point of view having the (largish) window opposite the doorway, visually, makes the room appear larger. A highlite window with a mirror below (ceiling height permitting) will also to a far lesser degree achieve a similar outcome from the mirror reflection. Our bathroom has a 1500w X 1200h window opposite the door with the mirror on the side wall. I don't have a drama with shaving & visually being able to look through to the garden area opens the room right up with a stack of natural light. At the end of the day it probably comes down to what 'feel' you want for the room & whether in your situation with the narrower (900 ?) window it will achieve a similar result as ours. To satisfactorily place a mirror under a highlite type window you will need - 1800mm top of mirror + window height (600)+ lintel to carry roof load. Probably a minimum of 2700 ceiling level. Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 12Apr 07, 2014 9:50 pm I would look at putting a wall in middle with mirror and than windows on both sides but take them all the way against the side walls and line up height of windows and mirror to be same with just single bowl in the middle Re: Window / mirror over vanity problem 13Apr 22, 2014 10:43 pm Did you watch house rules where they had the same problem. They built a sliding panel that looked like a mirror but you could slide it to show the window. 1 6342 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Ditto 3M Claw, expensive but best thing I've used to date. I put two of the 11kg ones in for a 12kg mirror on the wall, and its been great for 4 years now. 4 10972 Transform your bathroom into a sanctuary of calm and sophistication with Hera Bathware's Bathroom Vanity Collection.
