Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 23, 2014 2:56 pm I will be having my bathroom renovated soon, which means my teenagers and the tradesmen will need to access the ensuite bathroom for 3 to 4 weeks. This means me putting up with late night and early morning disruption through my bedroom, so I was wondering if I can re-commission an old toilet in the laundry, to make things easier all round. The toilet dates back to the 1940s. When we moved in the cistern was completely empty, and there was a wad of newspaper stuffed into the (dry) outlet in the bowl, which I thought was to prevent smells coming up, or maybe vermin? The toilet has a waste into the floor, which is concrete, with no access under (probably just poured onto rubble). There is another pipe leaving the rear of the toilet at an angle and passing through the wall, where it seems to join a vent pipe finishing under the eaves. The inlet pipe looks standard with the tap obviously turned off. My main concern with getting this toilet operational again is whether the waste pipe is still connected to the sewer, and if it is still intact. Obviously things could end badly if raw sewage ends up leaking into the soil under the laundry floor, with no way of cleaning it out. Any thoughts as to how I can safely check whether the toilet can function again? The Board sewer has an access point and a vent on my property, so potentially I could pour something strong-smelling (bleach, disinfectant?) down the toilet and then see whether I can smell something at the other end? Re: Toilet decommisioned: can I get it working again? 2Mar 23, 2014 4:06 pm Sounds as though is was just no longer used and dried up. First pour some water down and check it goes away. Then listen at the access point when its flushed if you can hear the water running you are probably OK. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
