Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 19, 2008 7:30 pm Does anyone here know much about grab rails and can recommend which ones are the best? I've seen a few varieties, and don't know enough about them to know which is better. The type I am looking at are just straight ones, which are installed at a 45 degree angle. Thanks.
Judie Re: Grab rails for bathroom 2May 20, 2008 4:42 pm Hi Judie. In a previous job i worked in aged care in the community and often did home visits to measure for the installation of rails in bathrooms, toilets and other areas around the house.
You can pick up grab rails from bunnings and the like. Make sure they are non-slip when wet and they should be installed in studs as they take weight. you want something that is strong, and the length of the bar is not obstructed when you run your hand along it. Can I ask where you want to install them and why at 45degrees. In showers i would install them horizontal as they are usually used to rest weight on and support you on the wet surface. depending on the length of the shower would depend on the length of the bar. In the past i have used anywhere from 300mm - 1000mm. In toilets i would either install them at the 45degree angle or vertical as they are usually used to move from a sit to stand position. I would either us a 300mm or 450mm length bar here. You can also install verticle rails at the entrance's to showers or doors where there is a little step to navigate. this will assist with the mobility up the step. i would usually install 450mm depending on the height of the step. this allows the hand to travel up or down the bar while navigating the step there are australian standards which specify ideal positioning (eg height, distance from the wall behind the toilet etc) for rails in the home. Hope this helps On the road to building our 1st home Re: Grab rails for bathroom 3May 20, 2008 4:44 pm also, i would often replace the towel rail with a grab rail. this was often much stronger and safer to use as people will often lean on the rail for support while drying themselves. much safer option, and less risk of falls On the road to building our 1st home The OP has gone The latch and striker are definitely not aligned but there was no point trying to help the OP understand that. Hence the reason they are no longer with us. 12 5692 Render your bathroom walls, two opinions versus the one, makes you wonder. 3 6064 Hi Geoff Install Puddle Flange prior to any screed.
