Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 17, 2014 2:56 pm Hi, i have an internal toilet with no windows and it has an exhaust fan that switches on with the light. can i separate the switch or is there any regulation that does not allow me to separate the switch for the fan and the light? thanks! Re: powder room with no window 4Jan 17, 2014 3:58 pm If by any chance you are only asking this to save energy; fans use very little energy. You should have a fan that stays on for a short while after the light is turned off. Not sure if this feature is regulated but it should be. Even if you just want the fan on after you leave the room, the light uses bugger all electricity. FYI, I installed an illuminated LED switch. As the room is dark, this helps guest find the switch. I think it's a nice touch. I don't know if there are any regulations, but that is exactly what we have done!! Works a treat! I love quiet toilets My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Stewie hahaaha Actually, it's quite the opposite! Our little powder room downstairs is used mainly for washing hands when you come back into the house or for guests (for the "quick visits" only ). And I love that I don't need to listed to the fan while I'm cleaning it or just turning the light on to powder my nose! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: powder room with no window 9Jan 18, 2014 4:07 pm The regulations here in QLD (apparently) are that they need to be switched with the "main" light switch when you have a room with a window. I don't like the exhaust coming on ever time we're in the room. For goodness sake most of the time it's a quick pee! Anyhoo, we got around it by having a separate light in the room (an above mirror light). The mirror light is the top switch, and the bottom switch is the fan and overhead downlight. That way we don't have to have the fan on. I think mirror lights are nicer in powderrooms anyway. Re: powder room with no window 10Jan 19, 2014 7:34 am Generally modern codes require the fan to come on with the main light, or the light switch closest to the door... I believe its a safety feature meant to prevent the buildup up sewer gases in the room should the water trap in the toilet fail. That being said, sounds like you can retrofit a split switch in ...after your inspections are finished. I'd do the same as others have suggested by having a separate switch for both fan and light with a timer on the fan that ran for say ten minutes after someone flicks the switch. Stewie Re: powder room with no window 12Jan 20, 2014 9:51 am hi all, thanks for your replies. My main reason to want to have separate switch is that when my partner goes to the toilet in the middle of the night, i usually got woken up by the sound of the fan. midnight pee doesnt smell, so there is no need to turn on the fan only to wake up another one who is sleeping. But if it's regulation then i cant do anything Re: powder room with no window 13Jan 20, 2014 11:41 pm Our build completed 6 months ago in Melbourne and we have all our fans on seperate switches. These included the bathrooms fans for that very reason. Why have fan on when brushing your teeth etc. Looking at some of the designs on websites, they are all selling very similar products.
