Yeah but may be this is because they use the whole bath room as the shower area - the concept of a shower cubicle is foreign to them... this is especially true of countries that are in the tropics, the water dries out pretty quick in the hot weather. Not saying it isn't a good idea, just that there are historical/regional reasons behind it. Saying that though, we have one in the toilet area, makes cleaning the toilet real easy. When I asked my builder to install them in my house in Melbourne, it was like I had asked him to split an atom. He did it though. The most beautiful doors and furniture in the World Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 5May 15, 2008 3:36 pm Pretty sure that it is compulsory in NSW too - plus the floors have to be graded towards the drain. Had one in our last home we built 7yrs ago, this current home we put a new bathroom in last year has one and in all four bathrooms plus the laundry for the new home will have them as well. Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 6May 15, 2008 10:26 pm It is compulsory in NSW thats correct Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 7May 16, 2008 1:49 am I thought it was standard in SA too.
For bathrooms and laundries. I was told a few years ago that it is compulsory in laundries unless the laundry is a step down from the main house. this is the case in our current house built in 1959 and common in older floorboard base houses. Every bathroom I have seen has got one and bathrooms and laundry in our new house have one, we did not have to specify this. Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 8May 16, 2008 2:12 am Here's the thing though......... many of them are ineffective!
In my business, I do some water damage restoration. I have attended many properties where the laundries have floor drains, but the outlet was blocked. Often, the outlet has a flap door and has been brick paved up to it, and the flap is closed tight. Others I've seen are painted shut. I'd suggest you have a look at yours. Make sure the flap is free to open (careful of spiders that like making their homes in them). To be sure, pour at least 10 litres of water slowly into the drain and see if it escapes or if it banks up. Ash. Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 10May 16, 2008 8:27 am from experience laundry floor wastes aren't compulsory in QLD, we had to pay extra to have one installed (around $150 from memory) Plantation Homes - The Meridian - http://ourmeridian.blogspot.com/ Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 12May 16, 2008 8:57 am Paula Having one in the bathroom would have saved my carpet from damage a few times At least 10x over the past 5 years in my house... the carpet in the hallway near the laundry is a mess...that plus it also leads to the bathroom and toilet doesn't help matters... Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 13May 16, 2008 8:31 pm Our old place was previously inhabited by a "DDD" (Disaster DIY Dude).
He'd tiled the bathroom & toilet over the top of the existing tiles - and tiled right over the floor drains! When we bought it, the building report noted it, and mentioned it was illegal, and more than enough reason to break any contract of sale we may have entered into. It didn't worry us, as the jackhammer came out and we did the bathroom reno before we even moved in. In some areas of the bathroom, the tile/glue/cement/tile/glue chuncks were nearly 3 inches (75mm) thick, as they'd levelled the floor with cement to allow them to lay 300x300 tiles (which didn't drain in the shower either). Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 15May 29, 2008 12:33 pm Reading HomeOne quite some time ago this topic actually really surprised me, the fact that some builders don't put the floor wastes in. Certainly something I would have assumed to be standard - it is with the place we're building so I guess builders have to put them in here in WA as well.
It only makes sense. I've never had a leaking toilet, but bathroom & laundry are certainly a must. Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 16May 29, 2008 1:41 pm You mean they have building regulations in WA ? I'm surprised after some of the appalling collections of loose beams and sticks I've seen. Do the hard jobs first. other wet areas are compulsory. Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 18May 29, 2008 10:07 pm ok this has got me thinking. we just inspected a house to buy - that doesnt had a floor waste in the bathroom... now, perhaps when they renovated they tiled right over the top of it? on the back of the wall of the shower (which happens to be where the fridge is placed in the kitchen, there seems to be water damage. the shower floor is at the same level as the rest of the bathroom floor tiling, so the shower screen has a plastic runner that drags on the tiles to make a 'tight fit' i guess. is this a ******* reno u think? Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 19May 30, 2008 2:21 pm Cabinfever You mean they have building regulations in WA ? I'm surprised after some of the appalling collections of loose beams and sticks I've seen. Honestly I wouldn't know, certainly hope so as we're about to start building. They do have independent building inspection companies though to make sure things are to plan & also to industry standard. So I suppose there must be some "official building guidelines" out there LOL Re: Tip - always put a drain hole in the floor of your bathroom 20Jun 03, 2008 6:30 am We originally asked for drains to be installed in our house (in vic) and were put off as well. Because the house has a single slab base, the areas to be drained would of had to have been specially set to have the right angles to allow proper drainage. Then they also come under a stringent set of laws and since no-one is really doing them here and therefore specialising i think it ends up in the too hard basket. As for having different building codes in different parts of Aus. don't forget the differing climates. Having a polished concrete floor works well in Queensland where the humidity wrecks havoc with carpet but would be downright mad to have in Vic (or Tas). can’t tell from the photo, a tie down rod will be 12mm, is it a steel beam? he should be able to work it out 1 4461 Thanks for your advice.
