I went through about 1000000 ideas and possibilities for splashback and shower niche tiles but was never happy with any of them. My main concerns were a) dating, and b) breaking up a small space with a strip of contrast. I ended up running our lappato floor tiles (light warm grey) up one of the walls (the vanity wall) and the overall effect is to give contrast without making the space smaller or creating too busy a look. Am very glad I kept it simple! But I understand your feeling that you NEED to have some contrast on your vertical surfaces.
