Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Dec 08, 2013 10:44 pm My partner are in love with the idea of a walk in shower without a door. As seen in the photo below. Has anyone had this built into their bathrooms and how much was it? We are at prestart stage soon. windows screenshot Re: Walk in (open) shower 2Dec 09, 2013 12:42 am Hi Steph, I am having 4 bathrooms in my house and the only one with a door is in the guest bedroom. I love the idea of a longer shower area so you can dry off within the shower area and not walk water everywhere. It costs a little more as the hobless showers are more work but you get a little bit back from having no door. From memory it was about 1500 per shower. Hope this helps. Cheers Mark Re: Walk in (open) shower 4Dec 09, 2013 10:43 am Your response was exactly the same as mine. I think the hobless route is more to deal with however I doubt it is 1500 more, especially since they do not need the shower pans. I am pretty much over it to be honest as the entire build has been dragging for so long I just want to get started..... The builder may not let you install the glass panel either. make sure that the length is sufficient so that water is not going to go everywhere. Cheers mark Re: Walk in (open) shower 5Dec 09, 2013 10:45 am We don't have doors on our showers, no glass either just tiled wall. This is the main bathroom (shower behind that front wall). In our ensuite the shower is behind the vanities. It was a lot cheaper for us as we would of gone with frame-less screens + no cleaning of glass I'll have some completed bathroom pictures up soon if you would like to check out the final result. Re: Walk in (open) shower 6Dec 09, 2013 10:45 am Hi Steph, I'm not sure that you would save that much. We paid $880 for the installation of our own glass panel that was about half that size. If you factor in the hobless shower slab as well, $1500 is beginning to look not all that unreasonable. We're in Melbourne. I don't know about other states. Ooh I was looking at this option too, I like it and yes would be better then glass - cleaning wise. Excuse me but I am a first home builder, what would I have to ask for them to do in prestart and would it be cheaper with just the tiles or same price as using the glass? Re: Walk in (open) shower 8Dec 09, 2013 11:01 am Yeah my partner reckon $1000 would be his limit but he is the one that came up with the idea so I guess $500 extra for something he really wants isn't much. It's just trying to justify the price, thouht it would be cheaper option for not having a shower door. But guess there are all these other factors that come into play behind the scenes. Thanks for all the information though guys, appreciate it! Re: Walk in (open) shower 9Dec 09, 2013 1:08 pm They charge you more but in reality it doesn't cost anymore at all! As for cost, probably a good question and would depend on what price range your tiles were. Glass is pretty expensive though, especially if you wanted frame-less (like we would of) you would have to do the sums with the tiles although I don't think there is that many more tiles overall doing it this way. No its not! I buy 1100x2000 10mm frameless glass including the brackets for $200. You can also buy it yourself for that price. Its actually very cheap when you know where to look! The idea being low maintenance but enough room for people to shower then dry-off. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Some things are worth waiting for. Would that technically be a structural change by putting the wall in with tiles for the shower? My rep keeps saying no structural changes at pre start. Sorry if that seems like a stupid question? Re: Walk in (open) shower 18Dec 10, 2013 11:24 pm We had our bathroom finished and then called in the glazier to install frameless showerscreens. Wasn't expensive at all but am struggling to recall exact cost. I know it was nowhere near the figures being discussed in here. Why are people claiming glass is expensive? Are the building companies taking you guys for another ride? People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people. We got it from Stegbar who also installed it in December 2012. Exact cost - $880 for a 2000 by 850 10mm frameless screen with channel. Are the building companies taking you guys for another ride? Totally agree! Unfortunately the building companies charge through the nose for extras!! Frameless glass is actually quicker, easier and cheaper than a standard hob style shower!
