Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 07, 2013 10:20 pm Hi, We are building our house and having a friend doing our tiling. We have to decide whether to waterproof around the edges and up the sides with silicone or grout? I don't know much about this or the pros and cons? Any advice? I have heard both can fall out etc. but am worried about silicone looking not very nice and perhaps hard to clean? Re: Silicone or grout in shower? 7Nov 08, 2013 6:34 am I've used both and silicon is the clear winner. You can get white silicon and other colours to match your grout. Applied correctly in can also look the same (ie set back a bit). If you don't want to upset your friend at least make sure that you have silicon around where the bath meets the wall. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Silicone or grout in shower? 8Nov 08, 2013 6:48 am asj25 Builder wants silicone. Around edges. Tiler said usually does grout. The tiler has no idea what he is talking about. Don't listen to a word he is saying. All joins between floor and walls as well as vertical corner joins should be done in silicone. When the house moves and settles the corners are the first things that crack. If its done in silicone you don't have a problem! I don't know much about this or the pros and cons? Out of interest the silicone and grout isn't for waterproofing. The waterproofing is behind the tiles, everything including the tiles and grout are on the wet side of the waterproofing. As others have said the best thing is silicone as it will provide flexibility, whereas grout may crack. I say may as my house built 13 years ago they used grout in the joints, one bathroom it is as good as they day they did it, the other cracked after 5 years and I replaced with silicone. Re: Silicone or grout in shower? 11Nov 16, 2013 9:05 am Thanks - yeah my parents house has grout and its fine. I get confused as the builder keeps saying that we need a waterproofer to do the job haha. Have booked someone in to do the silicone anyway! Thanks splashers, that makes sense.
