Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 14, 2013 7:17 am Hello, I am just wondering why a mortar bed on top of a concrete slab is needed in a bathroom, other than to create a slope to the drain is there any other need for it? My current bathroom has about 20-30mm step up at doorway, I plan to redo the bathroom and remove the mortar bed creating a flush transition at doorway and having a the waterstop only the thickness of the tile at doorway I have read floor wastes are not needed in class 1 buildings, however, since there is one that already exists I will leave it in place but not have any slope for it. it will be there just as a back up- better than nothing. is all what iv said do-able? I am thinking the tile adhesive bed will act in similar way as the mortar bed to direct water that gets under the tiles to the floor waste even with no slope, as water will self level and it will eventually find its way. cheers for any replies! Re: Purpose of mortar bed under tiles? 2Nov 14, 2013 11:38 am My bathrooms are done like how you propose and the tiles are not flat/even...corners poking up and edges dipping up and down. The screed gives a nice flat surface. I think our tiler used a lot more adhesive than usual to try and even it out but doesn't look great with rectified edges Re: Purpose of mortar bed under tiles? 3Nov 14, 2013 12:07 pm Most slabs are not flat enough to lay tiles directly too. I had our living areas tiled with 600x600 tiles and the tiler put a screed down first otherwise they would have been lippy(where the edges stick up slightly) The bed/screed allows the tiler to get the correct fall for drainage and also allows him to control the levels to allow the tiles to lay well. The levelling system will fill in the low spots as well. You should need to fill them before the levelling.
