Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 18, 2013 12:16 pm Hello, Need this time an advice in regards to tiled shower cabins which are leaking water. Our house was built and handed over 3 years ago, both shower cabins are tiled (walls and floor incl mosaic feature strip) and had to be fixed by the builder within a year as tiles became loose and water accumulated under them. It was confirmed by that time that the membrane was not done/wrongly done and the glue was not suitable for wet areas. Both shower screens were taken out back then, floor tiles removed, required preparation done, both cabin floors retiled and screens installed back. Now, approx. 1.5 years later the ensuite bathroom shower leaked obviously at corners we didn’t realise, in addition water found its way below tiles or inside the adjacent wall under the floor boards in our bedroom. As a result we have now an unusable shower, a wall full of moisture and mould and a damaged timber floor. The main bathroom shower which is now used much more than in the past leaks water (certainly no spray water) as well at the front, but I am afraid it may leak water into the wall which leads into our bedroom and may be the/an additional cause of the problem. I contacted the builder, they came out, didn’t deny that there is a problem, promised to source the right tiles and finish this time the job correctly. The suggested tiles they could find are now smaller than the rest of the tiles in the bathroom, according to the builder the replacement of the floor tiles should solve our problem, they would remove plaster of the wall to check cause and damage there and would look into the just recently observed problem in the main bathroom. Now my questions are: • Could be the cause of humidity/water inside the adjacent wall wrong wall tiles/wrong grout/wrong glue? If so, wouldn’t be a proper solution to remove them to investigate/fix a potential problem? • The suggested floor tiles inside the ensuite shower are smaller than the original ones and wouldn’t math those outside the shower. Do we have to accept that proposal? Are we in the position to tell them that we would request to retile the complete floor (inside/outside shower) with equal tiles if they can’t get the correct size? • The timber floor was not part of the builder’s scope but obviously damaged by the leaking shower caused by poor workmanship of the builder. I suppose they would have to take care of these damages as well?! • I understand that’s a bit hard to judge the situation without having seen it and I consider to engage an independent inspector who is able to assess the situation correctly and advises what needs to be done to have the issue professionally solved. Can anyone recommend someone (I had once during the construction time one on site, his observations have been incomplete and he didn’t seem to competent) who is a recognised expert for those things and does a report which details all problems and required corrections (location: Western Melbourne)? Regards, Chris Re: Tiles shower cabins are leaking, water damage 2Sep 21, 2013 7:20 pm Hullo Chris, I'm sorry you haven't gotten an answer yet. Why is it that builders can't get waterproofing right? I don't know enough about this to help you but "replacement of the floor tiles should solve our problem" does not sound right! Talk about a bandaid solution! And on the subject of tiles, I reckon if the house is only three years old the builder should try harder to match the tiles, we were able to track down more matching tiles from a big tile store that has a special remainders warehouse and it was longer then three years. If he can't he ought to replace everything so it matches. Best wishes with getting it sorted. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi, I've got a brand new (2nd hand) Bosch Hydropower 16H tankless hot water heater. Since it was installed I have noticed it leaks a lot. I took the cover off and it looks… 0 17937 there was an event. The question is whether the builder had the insurance and whether the event was covered. The workmanship is a separate conversation. 10 17364 I have a tool that i have created that does this. Message me with your details and I will send it to you. 5 21501 |
