Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 29, 2013 9:42 pm Hi all, just need some help regarding exhist fans extraction thru the roof. Im currently building a double story place amd am wondering if the exhaust fan in the downstairs powder room needs to be extracted thru the roof. There is roof access above the room and the room has a window, so do i need to run a duct from the fan externally or can it just run to the roof space? Thanks for your help Re: Toilet Exhaust Fan Extraction - Need Advice 2May 31, 2013 9:38 am I normally advise people to duct their extraction fans through the roof to the outside because of moisture and condensation which can accumulate in the roof cavity if that is where you terminate your ducting which leads to mould buildup. With a powder room you won't have a shower or a clothes dryer pumping out litres of moist air so you could probably duct the fan into the ceiling space without any problems. Don't know about smells though. If your lounge room is close by then it may still be prudent to duct it all the way out through the roof. First, and this is a surprise, if you have an opening window I read the rules as stating that an exhaust fan is not required to be installed. Second, IF you do install an exhaust fan (which you are not required to do) then it MUST be externally vented UNLESS it vents into your roof cavity AND you have a tiled roof AND you don't have sarking, HTH, P_D .
