Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 04, 2013 11:48 am I've been lurking on this forum for quite some time, and have resolved to take the plunge. But, I still don't know how to post pics, so please be patient! We live in the US, but my husband is from the Adelaide area so we are trying to build a a small prefabricated house on property in the Adelaide Hills for future retirement. I've run into a snag with the builder. We are (or will be) youngish retirees, so we have a design with an upstairs master bedroom and ensuite. The upstairs master has a nice size shower (1200x900), no bath. It is the second bath in the 3-bedroom home I am having a problem with. The room is comfortably big enough for a really large tub with a shower over, or a large walk in shower (and I mean 1800x900 large!). But if I put both a tub and a shower in, I'd have to have a fight with the builder, lose a linen closet, and steal 900mm from an adjoining large robe to have a shower that is 900x900. So, would you go with (1) the shower over the big tub, (2) the big shower, or (3) compromise on storage, fight with the builder and try to get both in? I must say I was quite determined to do (1), but the builder is making it hard enough that I am beginning to regret it. Chris (who likes baths, but only about once a month, and would probably survive the bathless house but be cranky about it!) Chris On the threshold of retirement... and trying to check my assumptions at the door Re: Bath over shower (again) 2May 04, 2013 12:04 pm Ive lived in a house where the shower is over the bath and i absolutely hate it! The bath always looks dirty. If you wont have small children with you regularly a bath isnt that necessary. My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: Bath over shower (again) 3May 04, 2013 12:31 pm Not absolutely necessary of course unless you like baths which OP said the Hubby does. I agree on your point about it not looking that clean. We currently have shower over bath and I find the shower curtain thing annoying as well. Is it the builder or the sales rep, state that it is your house and you want it built a certain way. I feel your pain and have been trying to build remotely for 2 years and am almost ready to break ground. I am in Singapore at least and same time zone as perth, but emails are a nightmare. Sketch up what you want and stand your ground. I used Sweethome 3d to draw what I wanted. Then the builder simply added their design twist to it. I would go the separate bath and shower. Why not consider having the bath in the master ensuite. Sounds like its just you and hubby that would be using it. Re: Bath over shower (again) 4May 04, 2013 3:16 pm I can't put the bath in the upstairs ensuite, unfortunately; its not big enough. The builder is hard to fight with because they just keep saying we can't do that because of transportation issues. Or we can do that but we'll have to charge you for it... a lot. Its a pretty small house (160 sq m). I hate to waste enough space on the main floor to build a big bathroom I'm just not going to use that often... but I'm having trouble getting the builder to come along and think creatively about how to make a shower over a tub nice, so I do think about falling back and just having a second shower put in. The hubby says if I do he'll build me an outdoor bathtub, but I'm not sure how I'll feel about that in July. If I live in the house long enough to get infirm I'll build myself a new ground floor master suite with a garden tub *and* a big shower. Mostly I think I may just be worrying too much about a once a month bath. Don't know if you've ever seen "The Block" but a couple did theirs like this last year. Will add a link so you can see what I'm talking about. http://homes.ninemsn.com.au/theblock/ga ... .slideshow Regards, Grumbles Re: Bath over shower (again) 6May 09, 2013 2:13 pm Hi Chris, I would go your option 3 which is exactly what we did. I gave up some of the wardrobe space to have a separate shower and bath. I find we mainly use the ensuite shower and I have the occasional bath. There is only the two of us here but I find the bath handy when the grandchildren visit. We have just got back from a tour where most of the hotels had shower over bath. I wouldn't like it in my own home. Good luck! You need to reference the manufactures installation guide, your supplier may have strengthened the base where it is not required to sit on a bed. 1 1828 Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
