Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 26, 2013 8:30 pm Hey guys I am currently at a loggerheads with my builder. I really want to add a claw foot tub to my ensuite. The builder has agreed to provide the waste point and hot and cold water points. HOWEVER........ Because the house cannot be issued a certificate of occupancy without tiling the wet areas......they would have to tile over the waste point and water points. So that means that, when installing the tub post handover, my plumber would have to jackhammer my brand new tiles. Then I would have to get them fixed. The builder will not install my tub because of warranty issues, and they only install fittings from a particular supplier. So aside from the jackhammer, my only other option is if they'll let me get my plumber in there before the tiling is finished to install, then finish the tiling. I don't know what to do, and I'm really frustrated. I can understand regulations but this seems ridiculous. HD Re: Issues with adding a claw foot tub. Advice needed! 2Mar 31, 2013 5:06 pm I don't see why the waste point has to be tiled over, tilers always cut in these points. I presume you are filling the bath from a wall mounted tap so the only extra work for him will be cutting the tile for the waste point. Doesn't even have to be pretty as most claw foot installs have waste covers etc. Re: Issues with adding a claw foot tub. Advice needed! 3Apr 01, 2013 2:10 pm We also have a hiccup with our upgraded bath but hopefully have overcome the issue because the bath is from the same supplier altho not yor average upgrade. My wife purchased a handbasin but as we are only allowed 1 plumbing item we have to have standard basin then install our own after handover due to our bath. Its our first build and find some of the procedures frustrating but no complaints about their commitment and service. Re: Issues with adding a claw foot tub. Advice needed! 4Apr 02, 2013 1:15 pm I fitted our free standing bath after hand over. The builder just left a 60mm hole in the tiles for the waste pipe to join into the plumbing below. Advice needed! 5Apr 02, 2013 10:09 pm Hmmm. Interesting guys. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who is having issues of sorts. I love my builder, don't get me wrong, but some of the protocol is just a bit too much. I found out today that they hesitate to leave a waste point pipe protruding from the ground, even if it has a glued on lid, because if I decide to not install a bath that waste point is going to start to smell funky without water running through it and then the builder would be held liable for that. Surely I would not be paying an extra $700 for bath taps and waste point, plus another $2500 for a bath and wall mounted taps in order to leave my tub in its box in the garage. Lol. Someone at my builder's suggested I ask to sign a waiver absolving my builder from being responsible for the smell if I decide not to install a tub. We shall see what my CLE says. This just seems like so much drama over a tub you'd think I was asking to fit a golden bejeweled pyramid into my ensuite. Lol. HD Re: Issues with adding a claw foot tub. Advice needed! 6Apr 03, 2013 12:29 am Hmmm................for years now we've had a smell from the drain in the bathroom (which we had to cover with a mat). Every time a plumber came over, (about other problems) we asked them why? The same explanation always is that the bath is seldom used and the smell would go away if it was. We swapped the bath in January during our renovation ....and guess what? The smell's gone! hurray! So we don't have to keep a mat over the drain anymore! The smelly drain is being used daily with showers and hand basin constantly flushing it. I wouldn't wish that problem on anybody! I don't see why the tilers can't finish the tiling and leave one tile loose, (with a pre-cut hole) for your builder to place after he's plumbed in your bath? The membrane wouldn't be cut at the time of the certificate being issued. I read that claw foot baths are a problem with load bearing issues, as there's no bed of cement under them. Is this a ground floor reno or upstairs? Re: Issues with adding a claw foot tub. Is this a ground floor reno or upstairs? Oh how funny!!! I'm glad that smell went away! I suppose I'll be using my tub a lot then if I can get the darn thing installed lol! If they are worried I won't wind up installing a bath and I will blame the smell on them.....can they not just include something in the contract saying I am responsible for that? Surely I'm not the only person who is adding extra piping for future fixtures in a new build? That is a good point about the membrane too. I wish I knew more about this stuff! As for the weight modern cast iron tubs are lighter than they used to be. I was talking with another member of the forum who said the weight should be no problem on a single story, it becomes more of an issue on a second story bathroom, where it would require extra support. The bath I believe is around 130 kgs then add water. Then a person. I'm doing a new single story build . HD Re: Issues with adding a claw foot tub.
