Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 25, 2013 1:21 pm Hi Everyone This may seem a silly question - my partner and I are first time home builders and are just going over the finishing touches to a plan we like. We asked the builder to extend our ensuite vanity the whole way from the toilet wall to the shower, which he has done but he has left a 9cm gap between the shower screen and the vanity and put the other side of the vanity right up against the toilet wall. What are my options here? I don't really like the idea of having a 9cm gap but I am assuming the vanity benchtop can't sit right up against the glass shower screen either. Is there anything I can do to avoid the 9cm of empty space? Is it possible to tile the shower up to benchtop height and attach the benchtop to the tiles or something and then just have a half shower screen? Thanks Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 2Mar 26, 2013 11:00 am We have the gap, and really I haven't paid much attention to it. Now that I think of it, we also had it in my old house. In our new build we are having a half wall, walk in style shower - so that is one way around it However if you are having a standard sized shower, what you are suggesting would work; you would just have to be aware that generally your shower is wider than your vanity so would you tile the vanity side of the wall up to the vanity or paint it? Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 3Mar 26, 2013 1:11 pm Thanks Agape. Our shower will be slightly larger than the standard size, but not a double or anything. Not sure whether I would tile the wall or paint it... Good point! Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 4Mar 27, 2013 12:17 am Our new bathroom reno left us with a 4cms gap between the wall and the vanity, (enough to put the weight watchers slim line scales on it's side in the gap)! lol The vanity sits directly under the shaving mirror, (which is recessed into the wall). That meant the timbers in the wall prevented the mirror sitting flush up against the wall) and as the vanity sits directly under the mirror, there is a gap also. I researched for hours online as to the best use of the space, colours, tile heights, shower heights etc and I came to this conclusion. It boils down to what you want, what you can fit (and afford) and the light in your space. Tile heights come and go. I thought it was floor to ceiling now, but the show homes don't always do that,(cost cutting)? I have seen showers with vanities butted up to them and wondered how easy it would be to clean the area in between? This is the only reason I can think of not to butt it right up. Have you asked the builder if you're allowed to have anything lower than 1.8mtrs doors in your shower, (my new one was automatically measured at that height - I think it is Australian Standards?) Do you require a bin in your bathroom? I have one down the other side of my vanity, (bigger gap). The other problem is where do you plan to hang your hand towel? I have seen them on the side of the vanity. You won't be able to do that if there's no gap, or if the opened vanity drawers interfere with where the hand towel hangs. Some things to think about! Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 5Mar 27, 2013 8:16 am Funny - we had the bench in the ensuite - almost from the shower - slight gap to do the glass etc, but had a gap at the other end - where it hit the outside wall. No reasons given - that was the plan ! So - we had it extended into the wall with a dbl power point above. I find Mrs SM tends to take over the ensuite and not like my stuff encroaching. She doesn't seem to realise why I need my things on the bench. The odd wrench or pliers are always there for a reason ... So now we'll have an end each ... Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 6Mar 31, 2013 4:11 pm I don't know how to post my photos to this forum! Any help would be appreciated? Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 7Mar 31, 2013 4:16 pm Just add in a nib wall. its a brick wall covered in tiles up to around 1000mm high. the bench and cupboards go right up to it and the glass screen sits on top and next to it. I think mine were $400ish each from memory but my builder charges a lot for extra bricks so I would expect it to be less! Yes you could put a brick wall in up to vanity height and then glass above but I really dont like that look. Noooo, dont do it! You will never be able to clean in there and will be able to see it through the shower screen. I have seen it done and it looks awefull! Here's the vanity I had installed in my new bathroom. Although it's not next to the shower, it's close to the bath and the wall. I had to compromise with storage - v - looks, I opted for a wider vanity (storage). I still wanted to be able to clean between the gaps (it's very close on the right side)! Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 13Apr 18, 2013 6:03 pm Hi Everyone Thankyou all for the replies and your photos and opinions. We have decided to go with the nib wall For some reason the gap between the vanity and shower screen would have done my head in.. At least with the wall there is no gap for dust and dirt to get down the side. Why didn't the bathroom installer butt the vanity all the way to the right wall? Even better if they install the vanity and then tile. It looks like an off the shelf vanity not custom made. They would normally have a bench top overhang on both sides so even if the bench top touched the wall there would be a gap from the cabinet to the wall. The vanity has end panels on both sides, this is designed for open ends not to be put hard up to a wall. With standard off the shelf vanitys you dont have much choice. Custom built vanitys allow alot more options and detail! Butt the benchtop hard against the right wall. That way you can tile over the benchtop and still be able to slip a tile between the vanity and the wall. That way you only see a small gap between the vanity and the tiled. The butting the vanity after tiling will inevitably need a lot of silicon to cover the join. Much neater will the overhang and tiling afterwards. Re: Space between shower screen and vanity?? 17Apr 21, 2013 1:26 am Nib wall is the way to go. Sure you could do it that way before tiling but the end panel might pose a bit of a problem if you ever had water issues. You really should have a filler to the wall side not a panel.
