Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 20, 2013 7:21 pm I'm wondering about laminex options for a new build with Porter Davis- I see there are many colours to choose from on the lamminex website- but are they all included as standard options? Or are there a few to select from in the standard range, and as with tiles and other things, much of it is charged as an upgrade? Thanks! Call Porter Davis and find out. I called Hopetoun, and the one I am interested in is standard. It's just really the glossy finishes and the different cabinet profiles that start costing extra. I think the "natural finish" ones are standard I think natural finish has the most options pattern and colourwise too. Too bad for me I like the different profile doors. Lol. HD Re: Quick laminex question 7Mar 29, 2013 5:35 pm LW, do you know where the Formica fits into this? Many of them seem to be gloss or high gloss, they wouldn't be standard would they....? Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Quick laminex question 8Mar 29, 2013 6:08 pm meowsy LW, do you know where the Formica fits into this? Many of them seem to be gloss or high gloss, they wouldn't be standard would they....? Hmm I'm not sure, I haven't looked In to Formica and this is an eye opener for me! I did a quick search and this old homeone thread popped up http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18411 Looks like Formica is melamine and possibly not as durable as laminex laminate. They're both made by the laminex group though. And apparently formica offers different colours. As for the gloss, I bet that's extra! Here's the Formica site. Have a poke around and I will too and maybe we can find something out either way I've got my colour selections on Tuesday so I can find out then http://formica.com.au/ HD Re: Quick laminex question 11Mar 29, 2013 6:25 pm hehe thanks LW. I see, the main difference is that it is slightly different material. I'm really after a white for the kitchen, the laminex samples I have here are not quite right, I have just ordered 'white' which I hope is ok, as I think laminex is what I am after. Good luck with the colour selections, can't wait to see what you have chosen! BTW, are you building with PD? If so, did you have a tile appointment first, and did you get to take a sample so you could play around with your laminate colours at home against the tile? Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Quick laminex question 12Mar 29, 2013 6:42 pm You will find the white has a yellow undertone, we wanted a very white white so have gone polar white in silk finish (slight gloss). Cost us under $300 to upgrade the kitchen. I think the whitest Formica is snowdrift. Though the paper had a cool undertone. In the pics I see f polar white it looks great! 300 ain't bad for silk finish, it's a good alternative to the glosses! For gloss my kitchen was quoted at around 3500 at least o_o HD Re: Quick laminex question 14Mar 29, 2013 7:44 pm meowsy hehe thanks LW. I know the cabinetry is confusing! I started a thread about it. Lol! I was just saying the same about how polar white doesn't actually look white when compared to a sheet of paper. Did you have help when you made your colour selections? I'm sure it's going to look great! Thank you meowsy i think im going to go for a white on top grey on bottom with white shimmer ceasarstone. the kitchen is quite dark so i don't want to go too dark with the cabinets. Boy this stuff is challenging! I'm not with PD I'm with Carlisle talk with pd and find out who provides the tiles for them. Then you can go directly to the tile supplier and take samples home with you that's what I did with Beaumont tiles HD Re: Quick laminex question 15Mar 29, 2013 7:46 pm I haven't tried it against paper just with it against the other 'whites' we looked at. We were pretty happy with it. We hadn't considered the gloss until we were told the price! Re: Quick laminex question 16Mar 29, 2013 7:49 pm fmac, hmmm interesting. I did like the snowdrift but not sure if I want the formica product, also I don't want to spend too much if I don't have to. Not sure if the snowdrift will cost too much... The polar white in silk sounds like a good option.. hopefully I can see an example of the silk finish in Hopetoun. LW, I found the polar white to have a blue undertone- whites are so confusing. Look at them under different light and it changes. Our colours are going to be very neutral but on the cooler side of neutral, so anything with a yellow undertone might not work. Wow, although our kitchen isn't exactly big I don't want to spend in the thousands to upgrade it. Too much being spent elsewhere already. Good idea about the tiles- I actually looked on the National Tile website to try to order a sample of the tile i like but it wasn't on there, I might have to give them a call or wrangle one out of PD, as I neeeeeed one to start figuring out my laminate choices. Our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64705 Re: Quick laminex question 17Mar 29, 2013 7:56 pm I think the Formica tends to be a bit cheaper then laminex, though I may be wrong. Our builder let us pick either so have the polar white in the kitchen and Formica storm natural finish in the bathrooms. I have heard of others who only get to pick Formica and are charged to upgrade to laminex. Which seems strange since they are all made by laminex! We've gone with white in the kitchen polar white silk finish cabinets and new crystal salt bench tops and light wood look floors. Bathrooms are grey and white with the same essa stone bench top. Dark grey floor tiles, white on the walls and the dark grey cabinets with the stone bench tops. Good luck. This is the hardest part! Besides the waiting we were lucky to get a great guy at our tile place who helped a lot!! I was interested to know if there really was a difference as we had the choice of either so thought it was strange others would charge for you to 'upgrade' Particularly since we aren't with a high end builder Is it just the colours that is the difference between the two? And name or course. Re: Quick laminex question 20Mar 30, 2013 6:06 pm good question fmac. I like the sound of your colour choices though, sounds along the lines that we will be going for. I am actually really tempted to choose a dark slate coloured tile for the floor, the walls will be a white/pale grey tile (floor to ceiling) from National Tiles. Yet to decide exactly...
