Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 17, 2013 10:03 pm Hi everyone. I'm having a discussion with DH about the possibility of wallpapering a feature wall in the ensuite. DH says I'm asking for trouble but I think it would be fine. The exhaust fan will be fitted very close to shower head and there is also a large window beside the shower for added ventilation. I have attached a pic of the wall I'd like to wallpaper. Any experience, opinions, whether good or bad, would be really appreciated. Give me some time and I will try to track down the link. I have looked a so much stuff online I have no idea where it popped up but will try to find it. Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 3Mar 18, 2013 3:04 pm Ok found it. I have read that vinyl and vinyl coated wall paper can be used in wet areas and that most wall paper catalogues will have a symbol on them to indicate what they are suitable for. I found this link with some vinyl coated wall papers, hope it helps. http://www.wallpaperbrokers.com.au/index.php?route=product/search&filter_name=vinyl&filter_description=1 Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 4Mar 18, 2013 8:47 pm Charnley you are a gem. Guess what I will be doing tonight? Haha Fingers crossed I can convince the unconvincable. Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 5Mar 18, 2013 9:35 pm I'm from Scandinavia, and all bathrooms where I grew up had wallpapers.. It holds up much better than the painted walls over here. It is not normal wallpaper of course, it's made of vinyl or something. If I could convince GF (which would never happen) we'd have vinyl walls and floor in bathroom, soo convenient and durable and easy to clean etc. Especially in the shower. And can look perfectly fine despite what I know you are thinking. If you tell DH about vinyl walls he will probably not understand, same as my GF. It just doesn't exist in the same way over here so people don't get it. Find some examples for him of how it would look like + all the benefits and maybe you'll have more luck than me EDIT: that said, not sure how it would look like with just 1 wall and the rest painted (or tiles). I'd recommend wallpapering the whole bathroom, although you probably are too skeptical as well While still keeping your feature wall of course. Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 6Mar 18, 2013 11:46 pm Hi tompab, yeah you are probably right about being reluctant to wallpaper all four walls. I think I may get sick of too much of a good thing and am only looking at feature walls. We had a couple of striking walls done in our last home and I just love the look. I'm from Germany originally and its very big over there especially textured ones. We also had a carpeted bathroom, a foreign concept here too haha. I think vinyl in a bathroom would be practical like you say but not sure how you would start such a trend over here, especially in the shower?! Anyhow thanks to Charnley I actually found the exact wallpaper I was hoping to locate, now I just have to work on DH. Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 7Mar 20, 2013 7:47 pm Just a quick thought SB...I think wallpaper would look simply gorgeous and very luxurious in the ensuite (would be visible in the mirror too)..but being a newbie and not having had wallpaper before I wonder if you can have it just on one wall as wouldnt it look odd just finishing on the corner...after all the corners in these homes are more rounded than a perfect right angle! You could continue it around the corner so that it is facing you as you walk into the ensuite and once again it would finish on a corner edge in the WIR but it wouldn't be visible there...Just a thought Slab Poured 30/05/12 Lower Floor Plate High 20/08/12 Upper Floor & Wall Framing 30/08/12 Roof 14/09/12 Lock-Up 13/12/12 Yee haaaaa WE ARE IN & I HAVE A NEW IPHONE Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 8Mar 20, 2013 7:49 pm My most scarring childhood memory is the argument my parents had when trying to wallpaper our bathroom back in 1977. Lucky my mum had two very neat girls. Hey and our carpet was Forrest green shag pile. Woohooooo. And another thing, I've been thinking of the return wall as well with it giving a better finish. Great minds think alike andystar70 My most scarring childhood memory is the argument my parents had when trying to wallpaper our bathroom back in 1977. I would never, ever go there. Know what you mean. Our living room in 1977 was textured lines in a cream/browny sort of shade and the dining room it joined up to was in orange and red retro circles. SENSATIONAL. But to ease your mind, here is pic of what I'm thinking of. I think it will be fine with my ensuite being very neutral in colour with just white, beige and light brown and no heavy patterns. You have to cut the paper and the rough edge would show, better to butt up against another internal wall. The wallpaper was a vinyl and difficult to work with. It was recommended for bathrooms but after it touched the pasted wall, it was very easy to rip when we cut it, if we waited too long getting it right. It looks great but was VERY expensive! ($129 a roll = 10.2mtrs). We used one roll! lol
The second room was also vinyl wallpaper but much easier to handle, as it was one flat wall. We used 3 rolls of paper there (same price). Time will tell how the bathroom will wear, (with the moisture) but we had the 1970's foil wallpaper, (which my husband called illegitimate as it was a b*****d to hang) there years ago and it was great! Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 12Mar 26, 2013 11:08 pm I would love to see the finished product mrs perfect. Please post photo . And I'm sure it was worth the dollars lol Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 14Apr 02, 2013 10:09 pm http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/9497/img2055edit.jpg http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/2262/img2071edit.jpg http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8352/img2058edit.jpg Here's the photos, (thanks to the lovely Michelle) for info on downloading. I hope you can get the idea re: internal/external walls. We used the bullnose tile edger to finish the gaps between the shaving mirror cavity in the wall and the wallpaper. In fact, we used the tile edger to go all the way around the bathroom, toilet and laundry tiles. (10 x 2.4mtrs). Isn't that wallpaper beautiful!!! Really gives the bathroom a fab personality doesn't it. Re: Wallpaper in bathroom - good, bad?? 16Apr 03, 2013 3:54 pm I don't know why you can only view 2 of 3 images? Anyway, here's another two pictures to give you a better idea.
