Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 23, 2013 6:25 pm I would like to know whether it's a possibility to install a bathtub in an existing upstairs bathroom? We currently only have a shower in there, but as all the bedrooms are upstairs, it's used as the main bathroom. We have a combined shower/bath in the downstairs bathroom, but I want to remove the tub, install a regular shower, and move the washing machine and dryer from our external laundry into this bathroom instead. Is this a possibility to be investigated, or is it that once a 2nd storey bathroom is built, you can't reinforce the floor etc to accommodate it? Thanks. Re: Installing bathtub in (existing) upstairs bathroom 2Mar 10, 2013 12:44 pm Hi Shaezy Firstly, yes you can certainly install a bathtub into an existing upstairs bathroom. Your concern over the floor being structually sound to support the bath, is really not an issue, as the bath gets fitted into the wall frame, and therefore the load is transferred to the ground floor footings. If the layout of your bathroom permits, I would ensure that the bath gets installed into an external frame (maybe under a window or something). Secondly, most bath tubs are bedded in a mortar bed, hence transfereing the weight evenly. This is not a problem. If however you were wanting to install a claw foot free standing bath, this may pose a problem, as not only do your floor joints need attention, but also the four point of load (the claw feet), need to be properly supported by noggings and correctly attached to existing floor joists. I wouldn't recommend this option, unless you have open access to your timber structure under the floor. I hope this helps, good luck.
