Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Dec 08, 2012 12:15 am Hi. We have received our working drawings and I am just struggling with a couple of things. This is our Ensuite: http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/EnsuiteLayoutdrawings.jpg This is the family bathroom: http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/BathroomLayoutDrawings.jpg I want full height tiling in the ensuite but I am not sure whether it is worth getting throughout or just around the shower area? I also think perhaps the ensuite cabinet area needs to change. I have mocked up a couple of options: Remove middle drawers (becomes an under-bench hamper space) and add drawers either side in lieu of cupboard. http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Ensuitecabinetlayoutchange1.jpg or Keep middle drawers and add extra drawers either end in lieu of cupboards. http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Ensuitecabinetlayoutchange2.jpg Also wondering whether a bank of drawers should be added in the family bathroom cabinet as well? I can't make out the size of the bath in the family bathroom. Is it a good size for what will essentially be a kids bathroom (we have none yet but will)? Any other advice or suggestions? Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 2Dec 08, 2012 8:24 am IMHO the family bathroom is too small if you are going to be bathing small children it will be much easier if the whole side of the bath was accessible. Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 3Dec 08, 2012 1:11 pm Check out a bath in a display. I did exactly that, I got in the bath to see if it would be big enough, we only have one so I wanted to know I could get into it. We did upgrade it to the bigger one because we had the space. To make the bath more accessible you could flip it so the tiled hob is at the end with the vanity. Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 4Dec 08, 2012 1:36 pm bashworth IMHO the family bathroom is too small if you are going to be bathing small children it will be much easier if the whole side of the bath was accessible. So do you mean turn the bath around so the tiled end swaps to next to the vanity, or make the bath bigger? Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 5Dec 08, 2012 1:40 pm fmac I got in the bath to see if it would be big enough Yes, I need to do this. Gotta make a trip to a caroma stockist I think. fmac To make the bath more accessible you could flip it so the tiled hob is at the end with the vanity. That's what I think bashworth is saying and I think that may be a good idea. I don't really want to spend too much on the family bathroom but do want it to be useful when we have a young family. Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 7Dec 08, 2012 4:34 pm Really? That's not too bad then. Will have to ask on Tuesday. Any other comments re the cabinetry? Tiling? Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 9Dec 08, 2012 5:13 pm I think they have centred the sliding part with the bath tap/spout below. I don't mind it being off centre to the room if it at least has a basis for being that way, which it seems to. Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 10Dec 08, 2012 5:26 pm If you can afford to get tiles to the ceiling, definitely do it. We couldn't afford it on all four walls in both bathrooms so we just got it on one wall in each and is about $1500. But all the photos I've seen of bathrooms I really like have tiles to the ceiling, IMO it just looks so much better. 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 11Dec 08, 2012 5:37 pm Thanks for the reply stellabella. $1500 for two walls?? I hate to think what it would cost in our ensuite then. I really like it too and it is one less colour you need to worry about coordinating really. Do you only get the cost at prestart? Or should we be negotiating it in now? Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 12Dec 08, 2012 5:42 pm I would try and do it now. Mum got both bathrooms done and I think they were around $2000 each? We didn't have like a 'prestart' process (I guess this is like tile and colour selections?) but if you can get it in your contract price so it's part of your loan, it's less you'll have to pay for out of pocket. 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 13Dec 08, 2012 9:32 pm For the tiling in the main bathroom we raised it so that the tiles around the bath were the same hight as the ones above the vanity, only an extra row but I think it will look better. Not sure about Ventura but we were quoted nearly $1000 to change two cupboards in the ensuite to draws, I decided to forgo them for pot draws in the kitchen! Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 14Dec 09, 2012 9:09 pm Hi there SW.... I like to have a set of drawers in the vanity units.... always handy for smaller/looser items and easier to access than opening/closing cupboards and rummaging around on shelves - I find. (I personally have a bit of a beef with shelves in cupboards under vanities - find that nothing fits properly, bottles always fall over when you try to reach to the back for something, PITA trying to get around the drains yadda, yadda, yadda). So my vote definitely goes to a bank of drawers each side in the ensuite vanity (or at least one in the centre) - and one in the family bathroom if you can. As for the gap in the middle of the ensuite vanity..... not sure about that one?? Might look unfinished?? Like when there is a gap for a dishwasher but no dishwasher?? Could be wrong - might look OK if a hamper was in there. Personally, I wouldn't have a gap though. I like the idea of floor to ceiling tiles throughout the ensuite.... a friend has it and it looks fabulous. Of course, comes down to cost and whether it fits into budget. As for the bath.... we have a similar layout in our family bathroom where the toilet is next to the bath so we don't have full side access to the bath either (and like yours, the tiled hob is at the end that we get in/out). If fact, we probably have even less access because we have a shower over the bath so we have a screen that would probably extend further than your vanity.... maybe not?? Whilst we do have to lean around to turn the taps on and off (not too badly as part of the screen swings in or out), it really isn't that bad and totally manageable - and the access in/out of the bath for the kids is ample. All good points to keep in mind though because you might decide you would like to flip the bath or keep clear access for the length of the bath?? Good luck with it all. HHCIB Re: Ensuite/bathroom questions 15Dec 09, 2012 10:46 pm Could you turn the space between the two sinks into a laundry hamper? I think I've seen people have the same frontage as the vanity but it is one large draw but looks like a cupboard. For the tiling if you can't afford to the roof halfway up can look good, you can also consider a feature tile across the top. S many thoughts and ideas! the step up is 30mm and wanting it to be flat . how much does the concrete have to be lowered .we plan on removing bath and lenghten shower and adding seat. the old bath… 0 8166 Thanks for the suggestion. The space between shower and sinks was too tight. I agree about the toilet location. So I have tried two other options: The lower one is… 3 4563 |
