Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 27, 2012 4:13 pm We are at the cusp of an old farm house reno and when we get to the bathroom we were thinking of one of those reproduction free standing claw foot baths. 1. It suits the house 2. No more gungy grout mould where the wall tiles meet the bath But what sort of a problem is it cleaning the wall and floor behind and under the bath ? We were locating the bath to a position almost touching the wall (perhaps 100mm gap) Has anyone any experience they would like to share with me, good or bad. Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 2Nov 27, 2012 9:52 pm It's a pain in the butt but doable. I've lived in two places with free standing baths and underneath is like a magnet for any dust and hair so you will have to resign yourself to cleaning under there pretty regularly. We used to use a vacuum cleaner for all the hair and dust then a squeegee mop, both done on your hands and knees. Stewie Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 3Nov 28, 2012 6:17 am Thanks for the reply stewie. As I thought it would be. Is it better than dealing with the mould and gunge of a bath with wall tiles down to the bath, or about the same ? Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 4Nov 30, 2012 7:05 am If you are looking to do a separate shower then the freestanding bath will be easy as it won't get anywhere near as wet. If the shower is going to be over the bath then you will be doing a lot of cleaning to keep it looking decent. Bear in mind that a lot of water will end up going down the side walls onto the floor no matter how hard you try. Stewie Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 6Dec 01, 2012 1:21 am personally I would not go for a freestanding bath for the cleaning reasons. You are going to have to clean behind, under and around it, which is far more than a built in bath and as stylish and pretty a freestanding bath may be, it will require more cleaning in less than easy to access areas. Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 7Dec 01, 2012 1:41 am We chose to change from a freestanding bath to an inset because of the cleaning and the amount of space they take up. In the end an inset will do the same job without so many issues. I have never had grout mould around inset baths before. Does sealing the grout help with that? Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 8Dec 15, 2012 4:13 pm We are having a freestanding and I'm totally prepared to get down and dirty cleaning just so I can have it. I guess there are some things you just want to have in a house regardless of the cleaning that is required but if your a more practical person than me and will hate that bit of extra cleaning stick to an in built bath and have the tiles and grout sealed. Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 9Dec 15, 2012 5:04 pm The flexible drain hose makes it easy to move bath to clean behind. I must confess only do this occasionally as you can't see behind the bath. I think it's worth the little bit of effort! Re: Cleaning around FREE standing baths ?? 10Dec 15, 2012 5:25 pm we had a clawfoot bath against a wall and when I removed it during our renno/extension....... ohhh the horror. If you cant get in behind it all manner of nasties will live there. For that reason we redesigned our new main a little giving us more space around a new free standing bath...that sits on the floor. Nowhere for gremlins to hide. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/sceen7/280212010.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/sceen7/210412048.jpg 3 3607 No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further. When I manage some spare time, I might play around with the first DIY part of my… 7 4996 |
