Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 24, 2012 9:00 am Hi all, I've been given conflicting information from different trades and professionals regarding asbestos wall lining in my bathroom, etc. (and under eaves). Settlement is mid Jan and I hope to have the house clean, safe and functional by then. I have young kids so I want to be sure I make the right decision about the interior. In terms of the bathroom, toilet and laundry walls - what's safer? Leave it and paint, or have it removed? Building inspector says leave it, plumber says remove it, painter says leave it, builder says remove it... Also could be asbestos under lino which has broken up in the bathroom from a leak, so if the test comes back positive that will obviously need to go. Re: asbestos walls in wet areas - safer to paint or remove? 2Nov 24, 2012 9:42 am Intact asbestos cement with a sealed surface (such as paint) keeps the fine fibre from getting into the air when it is dangerous. I would agree with the Building Inspector, leave it. Its another matter if the panels are damaged as they are only going to get worse, releasing fresh fibre. In that case get rid of it! Re: asbestos walls in wet areas - safer to paint or remove? 3Nov 24, 2012 10:33 am I personally would remove it. If for whatever reason your water pipes start leaking, you are going to have to get it removed before plumbers will even look at the job. 2 Re: asbestos walls in wet areas - safer to paint or remove? 5Nov 26, 2012 7:26 am Thanks for the replies. I'm doing a light renovation in the bathroom, eg. new shower base and surround, toilet and vanity plus floor and paint. I've decided to remove as it will enable me to do more with the house. Also I may have problems getting a plumber and other trades to work in there. After having another look there's a very fine line along part of the sheet so it needs to go. What do you call the person who comes in afterwards to make sure the removal job has been done properly, to give "clearance". Also, do they offer air testing or is that a different service? Just want to be very thorough here. Leisa - mum of two, graphic designer and printing guru. Re: asbestos walls in wet areas - safer to paint or remove? 6Nov 26, 2012 11:18 am Look for a company that is a licensed asbestos removalist. (the company -not an individual... for instance I have an asbestos removalists ticket which is fine for working with companys that have the equipment) They should be able to provide a complete service including air testing.
