We have just discovered that the metal part of the hot tap cannot even come off because it has been completely siliconed on, and the cold tap did come off but the silicone has been used to completely fill the cavity so we cannot even access the area. (Silicone is flush with the tiles on the one we were able to take apart) Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we are getting no assistance from the builder. Hope this works Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Trouble with leaking shower 2Nov 18, 2012 6:48 am Not how it should be done! With the hot get a knife blade and cut the silicone under the trim piece working all the way around. With the cold again using the knife cut out the silicon. Once it starts to come away the rest will pull out easily. When ready to put back don't worry about the silicon at all. Re: Trouble with leaking shower 3Nov 19, 2012 7:18 am Ummmm AJW I would say it has been done right with the exception of the cover being stuck on. The gap between the tile and the workings of the tap should always be filled with silicon. This stops water getting into the wall or behind the tiles. The only thing they have done wrong is put the cover on before the silicon was dry! If you are going to silicone the tap it should be behind the removable part of the spindal, quite clearly in the picture it has been put in front of the spindal making it hard to remove to replace the washer. Also you will find that silicone is optional in this area because for the most part the trim peice will keep sufficent water out. If you really want to seal that area then there are propper seals that can be used and become part of the complete waterproffing system. Some taps dont allow for the silicon to be put behind the removable part of the spindle and still waterproof the wall. Its a very easy job to cut silicon out but a very hard job to replace water damaged studs, floors and ceilings. I have seen water get behind fittings like this over the space of 20 years and cause alot of damage. The silicon in the photo is the correct way of sealing the wall from water damage and I would not be happy any other way! I dont believe them about this law. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi, I've got a brand new (2nd hand) Bosch Hydropower 16H tankless hot water heater.
