Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 09, 2012 10:58 am We are keen to renovate our bathrooms. But the walls are made of compressed fibre cents that contain asbestos fibres. So what now... I did some reading up on asbestos removal from the home and found that a) it's expensive and b) you are very likely to find bits of broken walls around your home and garden once the contractors have gone. So I can't help but feel like it's a lose/lose situation. I was wondering what other people have done in the past in similar situations? Re: How did you renovate bathroom with asbestos containing w 2Oct 10, 2012 4:02 pm See if you can find a good asbestos removalist by recommendation. As an ex-builder , we used to do a lot of bathroom renovations containing asbestos and we used to remove it all ourselves after employing so-called professionals to do it for us. Our experience was that they generally don't give a sh.t whether they leave behind dust or broken bits of asbestos. We used to seal up the bathroom with taped plastic sheets as much as possible, wear all the necessary safety gear, vacuum the walls and floor before, spray the backs of the sheets with a weak PVA glue solutions to minimise the amount of dust in the air, remove the sheets as whole as possible, then vacuum the timber frames and floor again to get all the particles, remove the sheets to a waste bin and seal it all with taped plastic etc etc. Good luck finding someone that does all that but it is the best and safest way to remove it. We are now looking at other options such as knock down rebuild or sell and move on because the asbestos is in many parts of th house and to disturb it all and remove it all just seems like a foolish move now. cheers, Re: How did you renovate bathroom with asbestos containing w 4Oct 11, 2012 10:24 am Quote: Hiring contractors who will charge thousands $$$$ is B.S No, it's not. It is a very hazardous substance to handle - a fact lost on a lot of people both in the trades and the average lay person. You are trussed up from head to toe in a dust suit with gloves, goggles and mask so usually sweat like a pig all day long. Then you pay a fortune to take the asbestos to a registered disposal facility - it is charged per kilogram no matter if there are tiles stuck to the sheet or not. I wouldn't do the job fulltime if you paid double what these guys charge. Stewie Re: How did you renovate bathroom with asbestos containing w 5Oct 12, 2012 10:34 am Don't get me wrong. I admire them for their work and I acknowledge that it's a risky and horrid job. But what good will that do me if there are fibres floating around. the step up is 30mm and wanting it to be flat . how much does the concrete have to be lowered .we plan on removing bath and lenghten shower and adding seat. the old bath… 0 11835 if the original house is in good condition most of what you listed could be added in stages without the need for KDR and costs and disruption of having to live elsewhere… 1 13678 Render your bathroom walls, two opinions versus the one, makes you wonder. 3 6062 |
