Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 13, 2012 7:00 pm Hi everyone I'm currently building a new house and my Frameless Glass Shower screens have just been installed, Except for some reason they have placed the screen door right next to the entre door for the bathroom (see photo) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have contacted the manufacturer of the screen and asked why they placed the door there and not on the side where it would not interfere with the door ( the ensuit screen has the door on the side so there is no problem with it being there) and asked them to come and fix it, there answer was basically it complies with building code bad luck Is there some way I could maybe contacts the building commission with a complaint or maybe have them deem it is un safe(wet floor in doorway, doors hit each other, doorhandle can chip glass frame ) It just that I spent months designing the house and paid thousands of dollars for the right look in the bathroom and now it's all gone to Sh*t, can't even stop the doors from hitting each other, if I put a stop on the floor can trip over it and if on the door it just hits the screen door, I have know where to hang a towel or mat or a robe Just so frustrated at the moment, Oh he did offer to install a new shower screen for $1600 Re: Shower Screen gone wrong 2Sep 13, 2012 7:12 pm If your door handle can hit the glass then it would be considered unsafe and unsuitable. Even with a door stop, placed well back near the hinge would be too risky. Is there any plan showing the shower door location. This would be great for your argument. By the way, for corner showers, I like the 45 degree cutout. You effectively loose nothing on the inside, but the room is roomier. But that's a whole different subject. Take a look at your plans. I have noticed however that the fall in the shower is not as per the plans. The fall should go right out to each of the corners, but it wasn't built that way. That's at least documented as wrongly done. You should ask the builder to fix the defect. He may offer to just change the shower screen. If the tile fall was done correctly, it would be logical to assume that the door opening is along the symmetrical tile opeing, if you know what I mean. My argument would be as follows: 1) The builder did the drawings and the drawings are inadequate in showing the shower door location. I've visited four project home builders websites and two have the shower door drawn and two don't. To me, the shower door opening should be shown on the drawing. 2) If the shower door is not shown and there are multiple options available, the builder should ask the owner where they would like the door. 3) Where the door is currently placed presents a breakage hazard from the room door handle. 4) The door placement is stupid. It's an embarrassment to the builder. If you were to ask 10 people which side to place the shower door, they would all choose the side facing the bath. Ask the builder if he would be happy to put up the photograph you took on their website. After asking, wait until they reply, even if the pause is 5 minutes. I would kindly ask the builder to correct the door placement as it is an error. If the builder does not think it's an error, rather than argue the point, refer it to the Department of Fair Trading for arbitration using the four arguments presented above. And get the tile falls fixed to that shown in the drawing. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Shower Screen gone wrong 10Sep 13, 2012 11:20 pm Problem is it was not done by one of the Mass builders, was a private draftsman and builder, and the builder just subed the screen out to a Glass shower maker so everyone is just pointing a finger at the other guy or claiming it meets building specs so there is no problem if only one of them had picked up the phone and asked, But most of all i cant belive that the shower screen guys thought it would be fine, I bet if he did this in his own house his wife would have a fit At least i have learned a lesson if i ever build a house again, you can never have to much infomation on a drawing, me being a mecanical engineer should of know this already but was first time dealing with the building industry I drew all the original plans myself and thought i better get a registered draftsman to submit them to councill and the builder, think he put about half the info on them that i had, but i thought he knows what he is doing he's been at it for 30yrs so think my only option is to put a complaint into the Building commission about the handle being a breakage hazard Oh i just noticed the fall on the shower floor now that you mentioned it maybe i can use that as some barganing power will try anything at the moment Re: Shower Screen gone wrong 11Sep 14, 2012 1:44 am I think they may have installed the shower screen as is due to the positioning of your shower arm / tap. If the shower door was where you expected, when you open it and turn on the tap you will probably be drenched with cold water. Would a solution be to change the room door and have some type of stopper so it doesn't hit the vanity? Our plans had pages showing details and measurements for all wet areas including taps, door openings, towel racks etc so I would consider the plans provided for you as inadequate. Hope you achieve a satisfactory conclusion. Regards, Grumbles Re: Shower Screen gone wrong 12Sep 14, 2012 9:02 am Good point about the shower head, if the door was to be changed where it would be more practical, then the shower head and taps would need to be changed as well. Personally i think it's a balls up from your draftsman, he should have put more detail in the drawings, anyone could have drawn that up! I guess the company who made the screen placed the door there because of the tap/shower head location. Re: Shower Screen gone wrong 14Sep 14, 2012 9:43 pm yep i think its to do with where the handles and tap is i had the same problem also, if the door is opposite the showerhead, water can leak alot easier and in the long run is bad Re: Shower Screen gone wrong 15Sep 19, 2012 5:07 pm I reckon you should send a letter to the builder and shower screen people saying you will be placing the matter in legal hands within 7 days if the matter is not put right - see what happens...and go to the master builders assoc as well. I hate the attitude of most tradies - they really dont give a toss..whatever is the easiest solution....Its a no brainer to put the shower door away from the opening door...but then many tradies dont seem to have a brain either..... Am I being cynical....YES.... Am I being cynical....YES.... While I agree with what you have said about where the door was placed I dont agree with "I hate the attitude of most tradies-they really dont give a toss" Do you really think most tradies are like this?? I think it would be more likely a few of the tradies that work for the large volume companys might not "give a toss". I employee alot of different trades all the time and they are all great. They show up on time, do a good job and clean up! Unfortunately in this case the door wasnt marked on the plans. This was missed by the builder, the owner and the shower screen company. The person that measured it up should have asked the builder or owner. Sometimes with large volume houses the builder/site forman makes the call. I agree its in the wrong position. I have just finished having my house built with a large volume company and found a number of mistakes on the plans just like this one. I sent the plans back with red pen all over them with changes I wanted noted on the plans. Unfortunately when we give our final signature we are saying we have read and understood the plans fully. Alot of people dont really understand the plans and issues like this are missed.
