Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 27, 2012 3:08 pm I'm building and the pre-start person said the following: *we don't flumed exhaust fan in bathroom *if we're getting one of those IXL light/fan combos you don't need a separate exhaust fan *if I do decide to have exhaust fan by itself put it in space between shower and bathroom, not directly over shower Could ppl please suggest/advise on this info - I personally don't think it is overkill to have 2 fans. Could I have a flumed exhaust fan over the shower and unflumed IXL style fan combo in the middle of the bathroom? We also have unflumed fan in ensuite toilet. Re: Are 2 exhaust fans overkill in bathroom? 2Aug 27, 2012 5:41 pm We had two exhaust fans in a previous house and its certainly overkill. IMHO one over the shower is the way to go. I'm not keen on those 3 in 1 units. See this post on my blog for the reasons why: http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=1432 The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Are 2 exhaust fans overkill in bathroom? 4Aug 28, 2012 12:08 am is flumed essential for ensuite - i know its not mandatory but would u suggest it? Re: Are 2 exhaust fans overkill in bathroom? 5Aug 28, 2012 8:25 am It really depends on the ventilation of the roof space. If you have good ventilation I think into the roof space should be fine. (Tiles without sarking gives good ventilation, with sarking and installing vents then could be worth while or use a flume) The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Are 2 exhaust fans overkill in bathroom? 6Aug 28, 2012 8:39 am i think so. the 3 in 1 does the job. you dont need an exhaust fan as well. dont know why anyone thinks you do. should vent externally by duct or by ventilators on the roof to take hot moist air out of your roof space. leighton at clark new homes Re: Are 2 exhaust fans overkill in bathroom? 7Aug 28, 2012 10:08 am I wish we had 2. Our ensuite is larger than normal and the ixl eco 4 light version is just a bit too far from the shower. We are having a constant battle with mould on the ceiling near the shower. grrr. Have started having an additional heater on in the bathroom during showering which has slowed down the problem but not eliminated it. Next step will be to investigate adding a 2nd exhaust fan closer to the shower. Hmm hope this will be possible. Re: Are 2 exhaust fans overkill in bathroom? 8Aug 28, 2012 11:05 am From a personal experience, I have to agree with Bashworth. I much prefer to extract the stream at the source, and have a fan directly over the shower. We had this in our previous house (which was 40ish years old) and there was no mould whatsoever in the bathroom at all. It may also have helped that there was a heating duct in there, too. FWIW, I never used to open the window in there as it had no fly screen. In the house I grew up in, there was an 3 in 1, and I really didn't like it at all. The room steamed up, the light was too dim, and the heater lamps really weren't that effective at heating the whole room (just the top of my head!). Despite opening the window after every shower, there was still a mould problem. No heating vent (infact no central heating in the house...was freezing!) In the house we built 3 years ago, the fans were already placed directly above the showers, and we added heating vents to both bathrooms and extra lights directly above the mirrors. There is no issues with mould, and I don't even think the mirrors have ever fogged up. I don't think it's overkill to have 2 fans if you want the 3 in 1, but I would get the other installed directly above the shower...it works! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Mazstar, not sure what flumed is, assume vented outside? Ours is vented into the roof space, we have tiles and no sarking, hope that helps!
