Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 12, 2012 5:03 pm Gday all, Just finishing the last bit of my laundry reno which involves replacing the existing toilet. The existing S Trap toilet currently sits on a concrete base raised between 10-20mm. Previously the toilet the floor was just lino so that's been lifted to expose the original concrete slab. My plan is to pull out the existing toilet and remove it's old concrete base. I will then be tiling underneath where the new toilet goes, ensuring the tiles are spot on level. The surface of the tiles will end up at approximately the same height as the top of the current concrete base. My question to the experts here are: - is the original concrete base necessary or was it just to level the toilet? - if make sure the tiles are level can I place the new toilet directly onto the tiles, i would use some kind of silicone around the base just to minimise the contact between the toilet and tiles - any other tips with installing the new toilet? Unfortunately my usual source of DIY info, youtube, doesnt help a whole lot because they're all American, and in America they use wax seals, which is completely different to what I've got on mine. Thanks in advance Re: Installing New Toilet Help 2Jul 12, 2012 8:10 pm Hi Craggles......I'm not an expert but we had 3 toilets installed last week - the trick was to get the right collar (there were different offsets...) then the plumber just siliconed the bowls to the tiles......seemed quite simple - though I wouldn't have minded a bit of cement to lift the height of the toilets up a bit, but apparently this is how they're installed these days. It cracks easily and is not strong enough. SIlicone is flexiable and sticks like s*&t to a blanket! I just installed 3 in my house. 1. You need to do a dry run to make sure you have the plumbing offsets right. 2. Postion the tiolet exactly where it needs to go. 3. Get plastic packers from bunnings and sit them under the tiloet untill level(I used on average a 5mm packer) 4. Push backers back under the tiolet 6-7mm. Check position again. 5. Squeeze silicon all the way under the rim and arround. Make sure you have alot coming out. 6. Spray silicon, tiles and tiolet with clear windex or soapy water. 7. Using a silicon scrapper ($2 from bunnings) scrap the silcion off. Spraying the silicon with clear windex or soapy water will stop it sticking to anything. If you use silicon scappers they will give you a perfectly clear straight silicon edge.
