No you dont loose any space in the bathroom or the room next door! The studs or bricks in a wall are around 90mm thick plus render or gyprock ontop of that. The recessed shower shelves sit in this space and waste to space at all. I do however agree about the waterproofing issue. I fitted a piece of 12mm aluminium angle to my wall before it was tiled. Then siliconed a piece of 10mm glass into it after the tiling. It looks like the glass shelf is floating!
