Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 22, 2012 5:23 pm Hi, I'm wondering do people prefer the 3 in 1 heat lamp/light/exhaust fan or a standalone exhaust fan and lighting? If separate, can someone recommend a good fan. If 3-in-1, are the much cheaper Hellers comparable in quality to the IXL tastics, or are the IXLs worth the extra cost? What's more popular these days, I'm building a new 2 storey house, so have the option of either at this stage. Also, is it mandatory to vent it outside on the ground floor bathroom, or just a very good idea? Re: Bathroom exhaust fans and 3-in-1s 2May 22, 2012 6:01 pm I would go the separate fan if building again, See this post on my blog for more details why: http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=1432 Although not essential its better to extract to outside rather than the roof space. Re: Bathroom exhaust fans and 3-in-1s 3May 22, 2012 11:25 pm we plan to in a separate exhaust and will be venting it directly outside, not into the roof cavity. It will go directly over the shower. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Bathroom exhaust fans and 3-in-1s 4May 23, 2012 8:04 pm I think separate is the way to go. What brands do people recommend. How big are the vents that duct outside? I see few fans have the capability to duct. I like this self closing vent fan, however can't duct it. Re: Bathroom exhaust fans and 3-in-1s 5May 24, 2012 7:32 am We have the self closing eco ixl fans. 4 light version. They are a bit noisy. Assuming the sparkie put the closers in properly. But then if you are in the shower when they are on it's not really a problem. Out biggest problem with them was the electrican working for the builder. He threw away the self closing bits instead of installing them because," No one ever had them in and he'd never had to put them in . It had never been a problem before!". Luckily we spotted them in the throw out rubbish skip, rang the S.S. and the sparkie was made to return and install them. We were so annoyed. Why would you buy the more exxy version and not install them? We find the ixl works really well in our main bathroom but I wish we had a separate fan for our ensuite which is large and more rectangular as I find it doesn't function as well. I see few fans have the capability to duct. I like this self closing vent fan, however can't duct it. A few of the IXL fans allow for ducting outside (see Easy Duct Triumph and Easy Duct Sensation). There is also an externally ducted bathroom ventilation system from Edmonds When we had an IXL fan installed in our old apartment, it was ducted in the small space between our ceiling and the floor above, with the ducting hose directed to a opening in the brick wall. No problem. Vent opening on the external wall was about 150-200mm in diameter. Can't say that any of them look pretty or discreet though. All hideous looking to me. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... They look a bit nicer than the typical IXL-type options 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase ....
