Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 01, 2012 2:10 pm The girlfriend has always wanted a free standing bath. I'm not too concerned about cost but I'm wondering if there are any problems that people have encountered with these baths and if it adds much to resale value. It'll certainly make our bathroom look a lot more modern I feel, although I like the classic old look as well. Re: Free standing baths 2May 02, 2012 10:49 am Freestanding baths ( both classic and new ) are fine but make sure you have enough room around them to clean dust etc. Two friends of ours have these in their houses and both complain because their kids are always spilling water and dropping lego blocks etc down the sides and back of the bath. On one end the bath is only 20mm away from the vanity. Makes it hard to extract stuff from there. The other has a 100mm gap at the back of her bath against a wall but still struggles to get stuff out of there. I lived in a rental place years ago with an old cast iron claw foot bath which was great but no matter how often we cleaned the bathroom it was always dusty under the bath ( old house though may not have helped ). Stewie Free standing baths 3May 02, 2012 11:31 am I love the look of a free standing bath..... In a display home. For me, it's not so much the cost of the free standing bath itself, that's prohibitive, it's the cleaning that puts me off. I lived in an old "Freo" house about 8 years ago. It had one of those old free-standing baths. While I love baths, this one was shoved right up against the wall. It also had the shower over it, so we had an ugly shower curtain surrounding it. Because the bath was right opposite the entry to the bathroom, the bathroom always looked dirty because of the accumulation of dust under and around this bath. If I was going to have a free standing bath now, I'd want the bathroom to be huge, so that you can walk around the bath. This would bring extra costs for the plumbing. Then, I'd have a separate shower (which would also add cost. Due to the larger size of the bathroom, this would add costs. Of course, my other choice would be to have a "normal" bathroom, then have an outside, free standing bath. That's the dream! Free standing baths 4May 02, 2012 11:47 am Ours is freestanding in the centre of the room - so you can walk completely around it. Wouldn't have it any other way with 3 kids under 6! The amount of water splashed would be a nightmare to clean up in a small gap. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Free standing baths 7May 02, 2012 7:15 pm You are gonna hate me, but we got ours for 300 bucks from an outlet here in Melbourne. We hunted bargains for months before our extension/renno started. As for position, definately away from a wall, we used to have a claw foot and it was a nightmare as it was jammed in a small bathroom. When I did the demolition we finally got to see the back side of it....truely disgusting. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/sceen7/mainbathroom.jpg Re: Free standing baths 8May 04, 2012 1:28 pm Ok screen, loving your bathroom, we have very similar setup with the bath in front of our shower, do you have walk through both sides? How wide is your shower and how much room between bath and vanity? We have bought a beautiful stone freestanding bath, our builder had a freestanding Decina acrylic bath included but I loved the stone Re: Free standing baths 9May 05, 2012 2:03 am yes the glass panel is a single piece fixed to the floor and bulkhead with about 800 each side as a walkthrough either side. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/sceen7/280212015.jpg The room is huge by bathroom standards 3m wide x 4 deep, so there is over a meters clearance between the bath and the vanity. we have good gaps between the bath tap and the glass so no problem cleaning etc. The bath is a kado lure acrylic, we did want a stone or metal one..but one didnt come up at he outlet we sourced all our stuff from. We have a Decina shower base in our ensuite and think it was a great choice. Re: Free standing baths 10May 05, 2012 6:15 am sceen - I love your bathroom! We're having a free standing bath in our ensuite, I'm looking forward to relaxing in there! Built the Seaview 36 with Rawson Homes - Read about it on my blog http://lamaisondemorgan.blogspot.com.au/ Re: Free standing baths 11May 05, 2012 9:02 am Thanks sceen, We have similar measurements although ours is longer and narrower, we have picked a smilar tile for the floor and back shower wall, with large white 600x300 rectified files for all other walls. We have a 950 opening either side of bath so very similar As for our bath, yep the stone baths are not cheap but we managed to get a good deal, as we also bought 6 matching stone basins, for all the bathrooms, so looking forward to seeing it come together. Re: Free standing baths 13May 05, 2012 7:22 pm Caz it can be very much within budget if you have the time to hunt around. Here is a breakdown of what things cost and how we managed it The tiles were 28 bucks a sqm bought at auction live Grays cheltenham The bath a Kado lure 300 bucks from the reece outlet in footscray The basin ifo $250 again from the reece outlet all the tapware/showers Hansgrohe Metris, Raindance imported from the uk at easily half the best price i could get here. The Scala bath tap $500 from the reece outlet The towel rail $40 again from grays auctions. Wastes were from ebay cant remember but around 100. We did very well on the cabinetry it was another grand including the stone top but the glass was top dollar at around 1600, it was bloody heavy as I helped getting it in. All up including labor its around the 9k mark Re: Free standing baths 14May 05, 2012 7:31 pm Talking about glass, we actually have a half nib wall, between bath and shower then glass on top, because they said full glass would be to heavy and to big to get upstairs, mind you we now need to get our 170kg bath upstairs Re: Free standing baths 15May 09, 2012 7:47 pm gogo65 mind you we now need to get our 170kg bath upstairs OUCH hope you know someone with a crane ...or Arnie..... from 20 years ago lol UP DOWN ....MORE ENERGY 3 3554 |
