Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 3Mar 23, 2012 2:32 pm Well, boring as it is, I just have mine in a pretty container on the bench top - I dont get this idea of needing to hide everything - I dont find them ugly, is just a functional item which I keep where I can easily access it - same as tissues and handwash. I would think it is better to be in the open air than a wet item in a drawer I have an ordinary toothbrush, not an electric one, so no cords to tangle up or power points to bother about. Same here, actually I'd never even thought to hide our toothbrushes Our bathroom & ensuite both have matching sets of toothbrush holders/handwash pumps though. I do hate clutter on the bench so apart from our toothbrushes, soap & tissues everything else it put away. I have seen toothbrush/paste holders that screw onto the inside of your vanity cupboard door though. I wouldnt mind them on the benchtop in a glass or container if my kids would use it! Little ratbags just chuck everything on the benchtops grrrrrrr Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 6Mar 24, 2012 11:26 am push a mirrored shaving cabinet into the wall cavity so that it lines flush with the main mirror. More storage, doesn't look bulky or out of place. But we just have ours in a jar on the bench. Will be getting a toothbrush holder thing screwed to the wall when we build. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 7Mar 24, 2012 11:51 am We have similar to megg. Ours is 3 doors though - two for me and 1 for DH!! Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 8Mar 24, 2012 12:05 pm We have ours in the vanity cupboard. I bought from Ikea rectangular plastic containers that fit nicely into the space beside the basin and also cup things with a hook built in to hang inside the container. I think they are meant for toothbrushes. Anyway, in the container goes all the everyday toiletries - deodorant, moisturiser, powder, toothbrush and paste in the cup. DH has his shaving gear in there as well. When we get out of the shower we just get out our container on to the bench top, use what we need, and then it goes back in. I did this because my husband does tend to splash quite a bit of water around while shaving and the wet razor etc would mess up the cupboard. Now the cupboard stays dry (and neat) and its a simple matter of washing out the container now and then. Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 9Mar 24, 2012 2:07 pm I don't like seeing clutter (toothbrushes and toothpaste) on the bench. I'm forever telling my kids to put them away where they belong!! In both bathrooms, we have old cups/glasses where they sit upright in the cupboard. They dry out in there, too, and don't make much mess on the shelf (wipes easily). Even though we have seperate toilets to the bathrooms, I still want them put away, anyway. If the toilets were in the same room as the bathroom, I just think of the airbourne poo water landing on the toothbrushes left sitting on the bench....yuck!! The top of my vanities are reserved for pretty decorator things! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Flush with the seat down - problem solved. Anyway, have always though this is a theoretical risk, not a real one - the amount of air borne faeces is incredibly minimal in real life and have never heard of it actually affecting anyone, Certainly hasnt affected me - have toilet in ensuite and toothbrushes on bench - have lived like that for over 3 years, left old job with over 500 hours accrued sick leave, have yet to have a sick day in new job in over 2 years. Not going to lose any sleep over toothbrushes on bench top. Someone else told me they wont use libraries because someone might of borrowed a book and read it in the toilet - cant say I let that fear worry me either Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 12Mar 24, 2012 6:51 pm I ALWAYS flush with the lid down, but others who use the toilet may not Besides the possibility of poo water landing on my toothbrush, recently sprayed deoderant doesn't taste very nice on your toothbrush, neither does hairspray!! You wouldn't want to stick something in your mouth, full of fecal residue, so I always store my toothbrush inside a sealed container. I take my ipad in the toilet all the time while I defecate. I am sure it is caked up in poo if viewed under a microscope, but at least I don't directly stick my ipad in my mouth. 13-08 Moved in 13-05 Build restart 13-04 VMIA compensation 12-08 Builder liquidation 12-03 Fixing 11-12 Lockup 11-11 Frame 11-09 Slab 11-09 Start 11-07 Contract 10-11 2K deposit 10-06 Titled land Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 14Mar 24, 2012 9:59 pm I've heard of this poo particle in the air theory before & yes I believe it but then I ponder...I don't know of many people that flush the toilet with the lid down & I don't think I know anybody that ducks for cover & runs away as soon as they flush the toilet...GASP!! imagine the toilet water & poo particles you are getting ALL OVER yourself as you stand there with your finger on the flush button Until my toothbrush tastes like poo I'm happy to leave mine on the bench Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 15Mar 24, 2012 10:59 pm Quote: You wouldn't want to stick something in your mouth, full of fecal residue, so I always store my toothbrush inside a sealed container. Blimey, full of faecal residue now?? Havent noticed mine tasting of hair spray or deodorant either Sorry, there are real risks in the world and this isnt one of them. If you prefer the look of toothbrushes other than on the bench, thats fine, subjective opinion - but no need to be fearful of imaginary health hazards, the human immune system really is stronger than that. Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 16Mar 25, 2012 1:46 am Helyn If you prefer the look of toothbrushes other than on the bench, thats fine, subjective opinion - but no need to be fearful of imaginary health hazards, the human immune system really is stronger than that. All this toilet talk is making me laugh. I guess I really do understand toilet humour after all. Firstly, I believe in using hand rails when walking down stairs. I believe in using my hands to turn on taps in the bathroom. I believe in using the toilet door handle in public bathrooms, rather than hanging around waiting for somebody else to open the door so I can scoot through. As long as I am not too stressed and worn out at work, I actually don't get sick very often at all. In fact, I'm one of those people who, strangely, occasionally wishes I would get just sick enough so that I can have an unscheduled break from work. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often for me. However, I would have to disagree with Helyn just a little bit here. Some people are more prone to infection by bacteria and virus and so, I can understand why they might have phobias about faecal matter ending up in their toothbrush and infecting them..... 'cause it just might. Even though the possibility is small, it's not pleasant thinking about it either. OTOH, I also believe that people who grew up being taught to "fear" germs rather than having a healthy respect for them, are more likely to be at risk of being infected by possible poo germs in their toothbrush. I believe that being overly hygienic all the time, actually weakens your immune response as your body is used to having external germ barriers applied, so when these are infiltrated, poo hitch-hiking on your bristles for instance, you are more susceptible to infection. That's my two cents. And I leave my toothbrush heads on the counter (in case you hadn't already guessed that!) Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 17Mar 25, 2012 2:15 am One thing I can absolutely guarantee you is that no matter what you do or how well you wash/sanitize that there will be some small amount of faecal matter on pretty much everything you touch - from your cooking/eating surfaces/implements to the clothes you wear money to you pay for your lunch with (after which you will happily use your faeces-contaminated hands to eat said lunch with), faecal matter will even find it's way onto the bristles of a seemingly "sterile" toothbrush that lives most of its life sealed in an airtight container. It sounds disgusting I know, but we humans are poo-spreading machines unfortunately and no matter what we do we come into contact with faecal matter all day every day even though we don't realise it. Having said that I'd probably still stick my toothbrushes in the cupboard if the vanity is right next to the toilet (as is often the case nowadays) even if it is only to maintain the illusion of cleanliness - however in our current house the toothbrushes sit happily in a toothbrush holder-cup thingy on the vanity in the bathroom (separate toilet is elsewhere in the house). Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Not quite sure why they didn't take off - surely it would be kinda like pushing the button before you've gotten off (I'm sure everyone has done that at some stage in their younger days)... Re: Hiding toothbrushes/toothpaste 20Mar 25, 2012 6:48 pm I am far from 'germ fearing', and so is my family, but we do have a healthy respect for hygiene. Washing hands before eating, after using the bathroom and touching the cat are a must. Yes, we do use the hand sanitiser if we are out before we eat ( with 3 out of 4 asthmatics in the house, the common cold can be disastrous) but I refuse to have all those antibacterial products and wipes in the house as I don't believe in them. As for the toothbrushes, they will always stay in the cupboard away from flying poo water....I just don't want to unecessarily add to what already might be there! I don't like the clutter! Lol!!
