Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 20, 2008 9:10 am As you may be aware from my previous posts we are building a new home with ensuites in all the bedrooms. Now we are thinking of in the kids' bathrooms of having plain white tiles on the walls with a coloured tile on the floor. We love the idea of having a feature "stripe" of mosaic tiles running down the wall in each of the showers. We are looking at Bisazza mosaic tiles which are 2cm x 2cm and attached by mesh backing. How wide a strip do you think would look good in the showers? The bathrooms are only small containing shower / toilet / vanity units. We were also considering having the same strip located between the vanity and mirror. Re: FEATURE TILE IN SHOWERS 3Feb 20, 2008 7:30 pm We have (or will) strips up the wall in the showers and across the bath hobs. We went with 4 squares wide, as the sheets we chose were 2 squares x 8 squares, therefore 2 sheets side by side... should have tiles laid shortly!

Depending how wide the strips of tiles are, will depend what you can do with them. But no point putting in a feature tile if you don’t see them straight away. When I did my renos 4 years ago, I bought rolled marble tiles about 35 cm x 35 cm, in sheets, I then cut those tiles to 3 strips as a boarder to my existing tiles. I did these myself, and it was very easy to do. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Make sure you get the most out of a strip boarder at least 3 or 4 tiles wide. The colour alone makes a visual statement against the white, here as spot has said, less is best….due to the colour variance. Nice spot!!!! My brother just recently reno'd his bathroom and did the same thing with a multi green mosaic stripe. It looks ok, but I think it's something that might date fairly quickly. Re: FEATURE TILE IN SHOWERS 11Feb 22, 2008 3:43 pm It’s been around now for about 3 years….strong!
So far it doesn’t look like loosing its appeal. But like most things, yes it will date….but sit back and wait for 7 years and it will be back in again! That’s how it goes. Its all personal taste. We removed the mosaics from our selections and just went with plain white rectified on the walls and a stone grey rectified on the floor. Simple is best IMO. We thought we could tizz it up with towels, candles, soap dispenser, plant etc. I thought it would look too plain until we went into the builders display home and the simple two tiles look great. Re: FEATURE TILE IN SHOWERS 16Apr 30, 2008 3:06 pm Couple of quick tips you may want to consider tho:
If you are using a mosaic as the feature ensure its a similar thickness to the wall tile - you mentioned Bizassa (depending on the series) - and they are a little thin. The closer the thickness the better eliminates any possibly drams with trades when laying. I try to steer away from mosaics in a wet area as they introduce a lot of grout in a wet area. And in time its the grout in wet areas that degrades the most. Depending on the the layout you may go for- an elevated mosaic panel incorporating your tapware for example. This way the mosaic is elevated of the floor and makes the mosaic and tapware a feature. Possibly a recessed panel in the wall can be used, once again reducing the grout exposure.
