Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: mounting towel rails in bathroom not into studs 6Jan 25, 2012 8:06 am AJW OurLindrum52 When drilling tiles, place some electrical tape on the tiles in the approx hole position. Then line up the towel rail holes and mark the drill hole with a felt pen. Most drills have a hammer or impact setting for drilling masonry, so select this setting ands using a masonry drill-bit start drilling. The electrical tape will stop the drill bit sliding off the mark when you start drilling and avoid scratching the tile. The size of the hole will depend on the plastic toggle, but needs to be slightly smaller than the width of the toggle. This is so when you push it thru the hole you've just drilled, that it grips and doesn't turn as you turn the screw and the toggle expands behind the plasterboard holding the towel rail. Hope that makes sense. Noooooooooo. Don't use hammer on tiles, you run the risk of shattering them. Best to either use a proper diamond tipped drill specifically for tiles, or at a pinch a normal drill bit with the drill set to normal (non impact). Leave impact drilling for things like bricks and concrete that a) need it and b) won't shatter. Sorry, yes AJW, I stand corrected. No hammer drill on tiles. Update from me! Couldn't find the trimmer - not sure if there isn't one simply because the eave is so narrow.
