Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Dec 03, 2011 4:30 pm Hi everyone, this is my very first post. We haven't even settled on the land yet but I'm already into all the detail. I'm currently trying to decide on the type of basin we want for the ensuite and bathroom. I love the look of the above counter basins (particularly the round bowls that sit on a chrome ring). However I'm really not sure what they are like in practice. So for those of you with above counter basins, what is your experience? - Will I knock my hand on the edge every time - Are they more difficult for cleaning - Is the lower bench height a problem? Thanks, Ruth Re: Above Counter Basins 2Dec 03, 2011 4:45 pm I have frosted glass bowls on the chrome ring in both bathrooms and would have them again in a heartbeat! Coupled with a tall, pin lever mixer tap and wall hung vanity they look really modern and streamlined. I can't think of one instance where I've knocked my hand on the edge and being glass it will give that 'ring' if I did so would have noticed. Cleaning is actually easier because it's just a wipeover, no tap bases where water can accumulate and the lower bench height hasn't been a problem. The bench height is one thing that concerned me too because I'm tall and didn't want it to be a back breaker, but it's worked out just perfect. Hope this helps? Re: Above Counter Basins 3Dec 05, 2011 8:08 am Thanks for the reply. Yes it does help although DH is still concerned about the height of the vanity unit - he thinks it will look odd. Guess I'll have to take him to some more display homes to convince him - he'll love that Thanks, Ruth Our Homebuilding Thread 17th Nov - 1st meeting with PJB architect 27th Feb - Signed contract 23rd Mar - Plans approved 3rd Apr - Slab laid 18th Apr - Roof On 10th May - Lock-up 26th June - Handover Re: Above Counter Basins 4Dec 05, 2011 1:57 pm PS4314 although DH is still concerned about the height of the vanity unit - he thinks it will look odd. We have above counter basin with standard (900mm) height benches. The basin are semi recessed and the top of the basin is now 1050mm above the floor. Our builder asked us if we wanted a reduced height counter and we just said to make it as normal. Re: Above Counter Basins 5Dec 05, 2011 2:49 pm We have above counter basins, but they only sit 75mm above the counter and the vanities are installed at the standard 900mm height. We haven't moved in yet, however do use them quite a bit now and haven't knocked our hands on it yet and it seems pretty easy to clean from what I have done so far. My only issue with only 75mm above the counter was finding taps that weren't too low or ridiculously high. Ours are a little on the low side and might annoy us after a while however they were the best I could find anywhere!! Re: Above Counter Basins 6Dec 05, 2011 4:17 pm Just measured the wall hung vanity in the ensuite and the benchtop is at 810mm, glass basin is 150mm high and sits on a chrome stabiliser ring both on top of the benchtop and the pin lever mixer stands 300mm high...works really well and not only would I choose the same again I would repeat the heights too. Builder or tradies weren't any help (surprise, surprise) so I had to figure out heights myself and keep everything crossed that I had it right. Hope this helps? Above Counter Basins 7Dec 05, 2011 7:43 pm For our pool house bathroom we are having a 900mm cupboard and a stone basin that is 150mm high on top. The SS was worried about how high it was but we told him we didn't mind. To get over the tap issue we went with a wall mounted mixer tap. Some things are worth waiting for. Have look at your house plans and you will probably find that brick articulation joint has been missed. Maximum allowable spacing is 6M or 5.5M for a wall with window… 17 20619 Hi everyone, Looking for some advise. We are about to build an above ground pool in our backyard.
