Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 02, 2011 8:14 pm Hi, So I'm planning to get vinyl planks in the wet areas, such as the kitchen & bathroom. The bathroom in particular is a place that is usually tiled, and therefore skirting tiles are used. What do you do in the case of using vinyl planks? Do you still have something to go round the edges of the walls? Thanks Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 2Nov 02, 2011 8:30 pm l am having vinyl planks in wet areas, skirting will be the same as rest of my house, timber l don't like the tile look. Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 3Nov 03, 2011 7:02 am Oh ok, where do you get timber skirting from? Perhaps the place I'm buying the vinyl planks from will help.. Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 4Nov 03, 2011 7:31 am What skirtings do you have in the other rooms maybe you could try to match it,some hardware stores.Bunnings is competitive. Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 5Nov 03, 2011 9:10 am I will have skirting board throughout the house, excluding the bathrooms/kitchen as that is a wet area...the house is not built yet, I've scheduled the build for Feb 2012 but I'm trying to sort out what I need post-handover before I go on a month long holiday Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 6Nov 03, 2011 9:39 am I find normal skirting board easier to maintain, if dirty i clean with "magic eraser" the one you can buy from coles, if scratched espeically those at corner due to hitting or knocking over with vacuum machine i could touch it up with normal paint. In that case I might ask the builder if he could put the normal skirting board in the bathroom along with the rest of the house, it might make it easier for me...and it would match the rest of the house. Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 9Nov 07, 2011 11:44 am Oh ok, I don't have tiles in the bathroom / toilet, thus the reason for my topic. Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 10Nov 19, 2011 11:19 am My mother used vinyl skirting in her house when she built it a couple of years ago. She has a traditional style home and couldn't get an exact match for the designs. She just chose a normal skirting, and a vinyl skirting, that were the same height. When they are all painted you don't notice the difference at all. They still look great, and she hasn't had any problems with them at all. I think the main reason people are saying don't use normal skirting board is because its a wet area....will that cause an issue? Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 12Nov 19, 2011 11:12 pm Timber skirting will rot if wet. Ideally all wet area's should be waterproofed & tiled with a Tile Skirting. Its your house do what you want, but if its new & requires a waterproofing certificate/form 16 then technically its abit tricky with vinyl & timber skirtings if you follow the letter of the law. Ask the people doing the vinyl installation will they warranty the damage that water could cause if it leaks due to not being waterproofed correctly & remind them it possibly could be tens of thousands of dollars... You might want to rethink vinyl.... Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 13Nov 20, 2011 11:14 am gizmoe Timber skirting will rot if wet. EDIT: Although, there has been wood skirting in my parents bathroom for over 80 years, it has been there since 1923. The only thing that has changed is they have roll-vinyl on the ground now. There is also wood cupboards above the bathroom and in parts of it, absolutely no "rot" or problems of any kind. Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 14Apr 10, 2012 5:12 pm MDF skirting around your house which is standard with builders will swell when exposed to water. Timber on the otherhand has less of a chance of rotting and swelling then the mdf stuff. Click here to visit Our Blog PM email id for invites to our blog Building at The Ponds!!! Moving in 2012! Re: Skirting tiling with vinyl (planks) or laminate 17Apr 10, 2012 5:43 pm I have just put vinyl tiles in a bathroom renovation. I have varnished timber (hardwood) skirting which is sealed at floor level with clear silicone near the shower to prevent water seeping underneath. I don't plan on having water laying on the floor for long periods! I also have the vinyl tiles in a powder room which has the walls tiled down to floor level, and again are sealed with silicone.
